non-obd vs. obd1
hi, i am new to this web site and this is my first post. let me get to the point. i am about to get a 94 honda civic dx coupe 5 speed. the car is obd 1. i plan on doing my first engine swap to this car with the help of some friends. i found out that the first gen b16 are non-obd and that i need a obd 1 b16 for the year civic i am getting. well, i dont want the obd 1 b16 cause for 10 more hp, its about $1200 and to me thats a waste of money, sorry, just my opinion. is there any way to get the non-obd b16 to work in a 94 civic that is obd 1? what do i need to get the engine to work? thanks for your help.

No. Unless you completely rewire the enitre car you will still have to convert the pre-OBD motor to OBD1 by use of the OBD1 engine harness and a re-chipped P28 ECU.
Buy the correct swap - the second-gen 170hp B16A.
You *might* only save a few hundred dollars once you add up all the **** it takes to make the first-gen B16A work in your car. What stuff?
1.HASport mount kit with cable-hydro convertor - $650.00
2. OBD1 Del Sol VTEC or Second-gen B16A distributor - $150.00 or more and it might noit even last long
3. Re-chipped P28 or P30 ECU - $275.00-$300.00
4. Correct 1994-up VTEC axles - $220.00 or so since you have no cores to offer in exchange
Plus the first-gens are weaker, their trannies SUCK, and the cable-hydro converted cars clutches just feel awkward.
I'm not talking out of my *** - I've driven a few first-gen B16A-powered hatches and they just didn't feel good.
http://www.osakajdmmotors.com sells the OBD1 170hp Second-Gen B16A swaps for only $1,850!!! You probably can't even duplicate that by buying the $1,050.00 first-gen swap and then adding all the parts I listed above!
...and if you absolutely MUST get the first-gen then at least get a J1 or JSM S1 tranny only! The Y1 has taller gears and a 4.26 Fd while the JDM S1/J1 has ITR-like gearing and the 4.400 FD.
The trannies still suck because at least 50% grind from the get-go and the rebuild kits are almost impossible to find since no USDM tranny parts are the same.
