Default Noisy Transmission. 97' DX

I went to look at a 97 DX today to purchase and the transmission was noisey, and when it was engaged in any gear i could feel extreme vibration from the shifter arm. My guess was loss of gear oil. Clutch engaged everytime and not grinds, smooth as a well machined head. Got any ideas on what could be causing this? The guy said it was just the vibration of the heat shield. haha. although that was making noise. Any insight at all?

Does it still make the noise when you push in the clutch with the car not moving? If the noise goes away when you push in (disengage) the clutch, then most likely the input shaft bearing is bad.

it only goes away if you push it in about an 1/8th of the way but if you have it fully engaged it stays there.

Throwout bearing for clutch or mainshaft/countershaft bearings insides the transmission.

Either way bank on pulling the tranny and replacing at least the clutch with T.O bearing and also splitting the case to check the 5 main case/shaft bearings.

its from some redneck. he replaced the guage cluster adn claims it has only 168,000 miles while the odometer reads 148,000. he did claim that he changed the cluster cus he "broke" it. it definatly has over 170,000 judge by how the transmission feels. the engine response is beautiful and no smoke or anything, idles great, thermostat opens up nice and doesnt get hot. it was also a females car...

mine has 177k and still drives the same way when I bought it with 67K, although I do need new shocks though. I've replaced both axles from one having a busted cv boot and both axles had slits in them but drove it for 70k+ since the dealer been telling me to change out the boots and one finally busted, also I'm still running on the factory clutch too.

okay, update. Bought the car about an hour ago. Engine sounds good. Drives like a dream on the highway, but as I am driving every gear sounds like its getting friction against something sounds as if it is low on MTF. and when the clutch is engaged at a stop its making friction against the flywheel and its loud, not like super loud but you can hear it. And also the guy said about the heat shield making a vibration noise, took that off and the noise is still there and cant really pin point to where the vibration is unless the car is driving, there is a crack from the back of the top O2 sensor to the end but its not through, its just a crack. It has the S40 trans and D16Y7, and single slammers are foreign to me. any insight would help!

I believe this is a common problem with the D16Y7. Mine has this crack as well.

Either way, definitely check the transmission fluid. The guy may have put some garbage in there previously, or there might be a crack/leak somewhere on the tranny. I noticed a huge difference in the smoothness of the shifts when I put Honda MTF in my d-series tranny.

oh it shifts like a dream its just really noisey and sounds like the synchros on each gear are just going out, the car has unknown mileage too cus of the cluster swap. the higher in gear you go in city driving, the less noise it makes but it still makes noise.

and the vibration noise only comes when you are accelerating. and also the transmission noise goes away at a stop with clutch in not out. anyone else ever have this problem? im going to get a video right now to further help with explanation.

Mine does that when it is low on MTF. I have the wrong axle in my trans so it dosen't seal fully, and leaks out over time. Mine does that exact same thing when I lose like 3/10ths of a qaurt.

Just re-fill it already.

Teach her before you install the new clutch. Then if she destroys your clutch who cares.
