I would think its a bearing gone bad in the pump. Do you have to replace the entire pump or can the bearings be replaced?

I have never personally rebuilt a PS pump, but I know it can be done. There are four bolts on the one side of the pump (facing the motor side). Remove these bolts and you can pull the motor. There are some bearing in there. I think the hardest part will be finding bearings to go in there. You can try Honda, but I think they'll just tell you to buy a new one. I guess you can always try when it's out and if you can't get the bearings then just get a new one.

Holy crap I just called the local Honda dealer and they want ~$300 for a reman pump!!! Jesus Christ is it made of gold?

$20 rebuild &gt; $300 for likely the same deal, just with someone else doing the labor.

I'd give a shot, I mean, whats the worst that could happen? The PS pump doesnt work?

yeah and what I really want to know is if you can just replace the bearing. The helms shows it coming right off the pump main drive shaft.

Diagram shows that I woudl only have to remove the pulley, C-clip, then slide out the shaft. Use a press to get the bearing off/then on. And slide it back into the housing replace C clip. Then put the nut back on the pump.

I wanted to see if anyone here has ever taken one apart and if thats all there is to it?

I asked my friend and what you said is what he said. He had a little more hard of a time getting all the peices for it, he suggest rebuilding over $300 for sure. He said it took him an hour.

Is there fluid in it? Is the fluid really old? Is the belt slipping? Check the simple stuff before you go and rip it apart.


I have rebuilt PS pumps before and they really are not that bad to do at all. The hardest part for me was gaining access to a press to get the bearing off/on. Definately a better idea than buying a new one though.

Just wanted to add...that if anyone has seen the service manual process for the parts diagram...and the rebuild technique someone on another site performed...Yes, the shaft can be pulled just by removing the outer snap-ring...BUT...there is not only a shaft seal that you could damage trying to re-install the shaft, but an o-ring on the shaft that could slip once the shaft is removed...AND the possibility that the rotor with the vanes, which is turned by the shaft, slips...and you cant get the shaft back into the body of the pump...all of which can be solved by careful and documented dis-assembly...good luck

I bought a power steering pump from RockAuto for $40-$50. It's been in for about 3 years without issue. Way cheaper than the regular stores and faster than rebuilding for me.

That’s a great price, considering local APS has em for 120 on up. But that is on the shelf , so there is that benefit. I didn’t see any less than about $70 anywhere on web.
