Default Noise from Transmission - Throw Out Bearing or Pilot Bearing?

Hey guys,

I've spent the last hour reading the archived post and I can't determine which bearing is going bad in my transmission. So I'll describe the noise and hopefully you can help me out.

98 Civic EX Manual D16y8

Clutch Out (Engaged) - Noise, Chattering

Cluth In (Disengaged) - Noise goes away

Noise increases with RPM's with the clutch engaged (driving).

No noise when reving with clutch pushed in (disengaged).

I can shift all gears fine. So which bearing is it? Thanks!

If it was the throw out bearing, you would only hear it when the clutch is in. Sounds like it's your throw out bearing. Mine made a kind of ratteling noise when it started going bad.

i had a bad input shaft bearing in my last tranny, if it stops chattering when u push the clutch to the floor, then its a bad input shaft bearing, u can hear the bearing come to a stop...(stop spining) then take the clutch out, with the car in nuetral, and if u can still hear it, yep, bad input shaft.

I'll put a $1 on a f'ed ISB.

Happened to my Y7 - the mainshaft bearing was also beat. Flakes of the bearing were missing - sounded like the tranny was going to grenade itself.

$40 and a couple hours later, she's still going strong after 25k.

How about just changing both while it's out? Might as well. Don't guess, put it all together again, and it happened to be the other. You'll look stupid at the end.

I had the same thing -> Input shaft bearing

While youre in there, you might as well replace all of them (both sides!); its not expensive

Ding Ding Ding.......Bingo.

This happened to me when i had my Z6. It was the exact same symptoms you have just described. I have seen lots of SOHC trannys have bad input shaft bearing. I guess they are kind of notorious for this.

damn you guys... thanks for the responses... i guess i'll have to spend more money now.

so i should really replace all? throw-out, input shaft, and pilot?

i called my friend who's a honda-tech and he said its throw-out. what are some possible checks i can do to determine which one it is or if its all of them?

Well first off when you remove the tranny inspect the throwout bearing and pilot bearing. Then see if the tranny shaft has play. If it has some play then its the input shaft bearing.

Do you mean when you turn it side to side? Up or down? In or out? I would really like to know.

IMO, I would replace both while the tranny is out.

How do you check for input bearing wear, other than actually taking it apart? Someone said to move the input shaft to check for free play. Do I just pull in and out, side to side, rotate the shaft back and forth? Can someone clear this up for me?

im pretty sure its my input shaft bearing but want to be 100% it is
it sounds just like my brothers crx si tranny with a bad ISB

i also read somewhere if it was the throw out bearing the sound should still happen if the clutch is in or out

Its the ISB (input shaft bearing) TRUST ME

A dry or bad throw out bearing will consist of a noise that will come into effect with the clutch in pushed in.

I had this same problem on a previous car...and rest assured it was the ISB bearing..which sucks cause the labor is a pretty pricey on getting it done....

Good luck none the less...
