No power steering = faster car?
SO.... when i bought my daily beater some time ago, it came with no a/c or ps. immediately after i took posession, i took the car to my mechanic and fixed all the mechanical issues with the car. as I was driving home/testing the car, i noticed that the car did not pull as hard as it did when it had no power steering. can someone please explain this?

eh, there is a slight draw and it will feel slightly more sluggish with P/S as opposed to sans P/S but not enough that it should be extremely noticeable. what all did you have done to the car at the shop, could be something wrong there.

Re: No power steering = faster car?
1 hp faster maybe, since the crank pulley doesnt have to turn another belt, and the car will be a bit lighter

well if you had a/c and p/s put back onto the motor than yeah it will feel alil slower. but depends what motor you have. on b series theres not that much different because they have more power, but if it was on a d series then yea i would think so. dump question...did you have your a/c on?

What else did your mechanic do? The PS does drain a tiny bit of power but not enough to noticeably affect the butt dyno. So it's probably something else. I'm not sure if he's an expert or a newb, but is there a possibility he might've bungled something, like set the timing a little off perhaps?

I've seen dynos of between 4-7 whp gains from removing the power steering belt on a B-series. That's around a 4% improvement. The D-series should respond similarly.

Who needs p/s or ac anyways? :p I can get away with it since I live in md but I feel bad for those who live in the southern states. When I took that stuff off my civic when I had a d15 in it I felt a nice difference and a lil bit more gain so imo u don't need it.

power steering is also good for parking lots. Ever drive an older truck like from the 50-60 range? wow talk about hassles trying to turn that SOB

Re: No power steering = faster car?
I agree. Its nice but IMO no Civic, etc from 88-00 need P/S. I ditched my P/S a long time ago..its a bit more of a hassle in tight parking lots but damn grow some forearm mucsles.
I don't have A/C either..how much removing the P/S frees up HP I don't know. Removing it and the A/C will save some weight but shouldn't be that big of a deal. My engine bay is just alot cleaner without that **** in there plus a turbo will take up some of the room where the old A/C condensor used to sit
And with no A/C-P/S brackets..it just makes the bay and engine look that much cleaner.

Re: No power steering = faster car?
I did a write-up on converting power steering to manual. Just search my username.
I removed it in my hatch for a few reasons. The parasitic loss is minimal, the weight reduction is probably even less, but the feel is much better. Power steering removes the feel from the road during spirited drives. After the conversion, the car felt more nimble in my hands, and control was more immanent.
Not to mention that the car steers just as easily when converted correctly. Slightly harder when completely stopped, but nothing to complain about.
Power steering is for old ladies.....

Re: No power steering = faster car?
You know thats probably the most noticable thing I like..and I didn't even mention it..is the feel. You can feel the road alot better. The p/s seems to soak everything up. I know after I removed mine I drove for months without driving a p/s car. Then I jumped in my bros 08 Civic SI and it just felt way to responsive with p/s. It kinda "darts" in other words with very little input from the steering wheel.

Re: No power steering = faster car?
I have driven an EG with a manual rack and a EG with a power rack that had been converted. I prefer the power converted rack due to the higher steering ratio. The feel of the two were similar, but the steering was much quicker with the converted rack.
Probably the best mod I have done thus far... definitely the cheapest..LOL
