check the grounds and the wire that powers the starter and make sure they are connected and free of corrosion, could be a dead spot in the starter or something binding the engine, can you turn the engine over with a ratchet on the crank?

if it turns over with the ratchet then i would definitely check electrical connections, sounds like it is getting some power but not enough current to turn it over. is the hum coming from the starter or something else, like a relay?

If you can turn the engine by hand but the starter isn't able to crank it over I'd check the starter itself, maybe take off off the transmission and see if it actually spins. if it does I'd check the teeth on the flywheel, maybe they are broken off or something.
Basically check anything and everything around the starter. It should crank the engine, thats the first place you start if it doesn.t

then take the starter off and rest it on the tranny and maby have someone hold it, see if it spins when you crank it, if it does put it back in and try it, if not you got a bad starter. ive seen brand new starters not work at all.

Is the transmission ground wire attached, clean, and tight?
There's a large Blk wire that goes from the battery directly to the starter. Check whether you measure battery voltage at this starter terminal.
There's a smaller Blk/Wht wire attached to the starter solenoid. Check whether you measure 12V at this starter terminal when the key is turned to ON(III).

well everything is hooked up....the shifter in the car wont go into any gear
from putting the motor in, the clutch still doesnt have pressure in the fluid and pedal lays on the floor.

you tried clutch starting it?
not going into any gear sounds like you're bone try on DOT3. check your Reservoir. and lines for any leaks.
a friend of mines car wouldnt go into any gear and we almost bend the shift lever trying...turned to just be leakin fluid through the internal slave and was outta fluid.

its full of fluid. i poured a half bottle in. i tried pumping and bleeding the clutch....still no pressure, no leaks. new slave dealy. the humming is coming from the new starter. the flywheel wont turn . i havent tried rolling the car. the rear is still in the air half done with disc swap. how do i get the clutch pedal to get pressure i pumped it for like 78 years.

starter solenoid? do you turn the key, hear a whiz, then a click? cause thats your starter solenoid. check your ground wires and the connection to the starter. possibly pull it and have it tested at a Checker auto or somethin. could be dead.

Re: no crank, just hums
i took the starter off and went to autozone to check it. it was fine. i got home and put it on...and it turned over...weird. but it wont fire. im not sure if the timing is right, but it cranks over. when i turn the key it feels like i have a solid motor mount when its trying to start. i tried 3x. letting fuel all the stuff fluid get in.
its smelt like somthing like alot of metal friction. the oil squirters inside should be working, does this seem like a firing problem? or just needs more tries to start? i stopped cuz it smelt funny i didnt want to spin a bearing or somthn. any ideas.

loud hums to me sounds more like the starter gear is not engaging with the flywheel. like its spinning but the gear is not moving out like it should. try taking the starter out putting it in a vise and bench testing it.

you clutch pedal switch might need adjustment.just reach underneath and push the switch manually and crank it.there might even be a hole in you clutch pedal where its suppose to hit the switch.there was in mine and metal fillered it.

could be your coil is dead.....pull a plug wire and stick a plug in the end then turn key and see if there is a spark...just happened to me on my DC4

Re: no crank, just hums
no the firing order was way off the dizzy caps i had, had 2 dif markings...idk why. i went to start it though... putn the neg to the battery and it sparked real big i let it sit for a sec and it stunk and kinda kept chirping and popping. every thing is grounded and hookeup up properly. the power wire didnt get hot though. i have msd 6 digital hooked up. am i fine to just put the neg back on and start it? do neg ground to battery usually spark real big and get agitated? again everything is grounded

Re: no crank, just hums
The starter is bad. It's not impossible to get a bad new starter because it's happened to me before. If you turn the key and you just hear a humming/whirring noise it's the starter gear spinning. Basically the armature in the starter is not moving the gear into contact with the flywheel. I don't care if Auto Zone says it's good because those tests are ****ing bullshit. That's like when people check their battery and say it's got 12.5 volts so it must be good. Ever heard of a load test?
