civic duty

Newer car with an older swap---I have heard so many conflicting stories about this topic. I have heard that it is completely illegal. I have also heard that if they(car and motor) are both the same OBD, then it is ok. It may also be based on which state youreside in, I live in Virginia where there are bi-yearly emissions. I have a 99 EK, im trying to figure out if i can only use a 99+ swap.

Im going back and forth on whether to swap or stay SOHC(which i prolly will).

Any input would be appreciated

Find out from your local emission control people.. here in cali it works where if that engine was produced in that year so if you have an GSR motor from 1997 and put it in a 2000 car you can since that motor was produced in 2000

Incorrect type R. The motor must be of the same year of the car or newer, or its not legal for use on the California public highways.

I second jrsc's same year or newer...... All emission 's related equipment and ecu must come from the year car that the motor came out of also.... You might want to check your local regulations...

Yeah up in nova around DC they check for emmissions, I live in va and all I have is the state inspection every year. They don't check anything under the hood to see what engine/ecu you have. I don't know how involved they get up there but IMO you could get by with 96+ but theres also two different obd2's. 96-98 and 99-00.

OH really.. and youre POSITIVE about this?

go visit your local BAR office and say the same thing I mentioned, say your putting in an OBD-II engine from a 1997 Integra GSR into a 2000 civic EX and see what happens. Given I already did and his explanation was that as long as that motor was built (meaning a B18C) which was avalible in 2000 then you can swap it as long as all the SMOG parts are from the 2000 year. SO even if the casting was for a 1997 you can BAR it legally
