Default Newbie to Honda's

Hey everyone, my name's Chris I'm 23, currently deployed in Afghanistan. The topic title is what it is. I've never really been around Honda's too much and so I wanted to ask a few questions because I couldn't find it in a search.

I'm wanting to build a EG hatch but I'm not sure which motor to choose. I read through the thread about the different stats of each motor and it was helpful, but I'd rather hear what other EG hatch owners have done and what has done them good in the past.

I'm budgeting around 10k for cost of car and swap with a few suspension mods as well as a few bolt ons maybe with a little bit of spray or if I can piece together a decent turbo setup for a decent price then I would go that route.

Thanks and any help is appreciated. If anyone has any questions for me feel free to ask...and try not to ask stupid ****.

i myself have a b18c1 built and turboed in mine but if i could do it all over again i would have stayed single over head cam like the d16z6 and built that, its much cheaper to get going makes great power turboed and not as expensive to fix thing if you ever need to

I would either go with a GSR or LS Integra motor. The LS responds very well with boost, and with stock internals, you could expect around 250whp+ depending on the tune.

With a GSR, you could boost it as well and basically have a LS/vtec (but more reliable).

I'd get a clean EG and put a 98+ ITR swap with that money...

B16B is a nice *** motor with a strong *** tranny that makes power at 9000rpm. But you'd most likely lose to a properly boosted Z6.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I actually had been thinking about the CTR or the ITR motor both make good power for what they are and from what I've read have a lot of potential. I keep going back and forth between which I like better a EG or EK, what is the weight difference? Anyone know off the top of their head?

I know that it may not be a big deal to some people but I want power windows and locks and AC, just can't go with out them especially if I drive the car regularly.

Also, how much does it cost to do a GSR rear disk brake swap? Or is there a cheaper route to go with that? I will probably AutoX the car occasionally and I would prefer to do the brakes before I get too heavy into AutoX again.

Again thanks guys! Keep the ideas coming

Also, what would I be looking at to boost a CTR motor as far as cost and reliability? I'm not looking for anything like 400hp, just something to stomp on some vettes with. Around Fort Campbell, there are a lot of V8's and I just can't bring myself to ever buying one due to gas prices, lol.

I bought my eg for $500, and then bought a junkyard z6 for 250, rebuilt it for turbo (vitara setup) for around $850, then pieced a turbo setup together for maybe $1800. It'll outrun some mustangs gt's and its only at 8psi on a .57 trim t3/t4. So you can stay really cheap with a sohc, but a dohc will respond better and since you have a 10k limit you could do a dohc, b-series vtec (b17 would be awesome though cause the rarity) or a ls motor and still have enough for a decent suspension.

I don't reccomend boosting a B16B, at least in it's stock form because of the high compression (which will make it more prone to detonation) but ITRs have been boosted before so I guess there's no reason a CTR can't. It's a pretty square motor so the idea of it having low compression pistons and a decent sized turbo kind of sounds nice as far as it's revving capability, the valvetrain will hold up to at least 9.5k+rpm. Sounds expensive, but probably worth it and most of all original. You know that intake manifold and head flow mad amounts of air given that they're hand ported from Honda. The gears will be really short but the LSD will definately help with traction. B16B is sounding better and better.

Thanks for the help guys, and thanks for the Support of the troops.

I really am leaning towards a B16B, but I really don't wanna do rods and pistons right away, but on the other hand, the LS motor sounds decent too. Are parts for those cheaper than a B16B or ITR motor?

So while I've been out on tower guard I've been thinking about a LS or B20 turbo, I heard the B20 has thin cylinder walls though so thats the only concern I have for that. Anyone ever done or heard about the LS turbo? As far as parts cheap, reliability, good HP/TQ numbers etc?

Heck yeah man, LS is probably the most turbo'd motor out there, it's great for boost because of...

1) It's low compression
2) 1834cc displacement
3) thicker walls than the B20B/Z
4) Long gears to keep you in boost longer + for traction
5) DOHC, and some say non-VTECs have higher oil pressure

I don't know what else to say, it's a great motor for boost right out of the box and has so many aftermarket parts for it it's rediculous.

Thanks for the reply man, I had decided to stop being lazy and stumbled onto the LS boost thread in the Forced Induction section on here and was reading what some guys had done to their LS's and it sounds like I could easily build a killer motor/car setup with 10k so now I just need to make a list of parts and pricing so I can start hunting down some parts for when I get home. I hate waiting til last minute to buy parts especially when a build is in the midst. Thanks for the help guys. If any of you have a boosted LS please by all means PM me or hit me up on yahoo IM, my name on there is the same as on here.

Again, thanks guys!
