Default new to vtec

my first honda was a 95 civic coupe DX, which had a d15
i sold that and bought a 93 civic coupe EX, which came with a d16z6.
they tell me i have vtec but i dont feel it or hear it
at what rpm does it kick in?
and is there something i can do to hear it better?

Oh boy...

You're never going to feel VTEC on any stock VTEC motor and you're certainly not going to even hear it on a single cam.

By the way, you're about to get about a million humiliating slams sarcastically telling you how to get your VTEC to "kick".

4.5k rpm's a cold air or short ram intake will definitely make it audible. Do you have a check engine light? Is your oil low?

What do you mean by feel it? Sure, in my Si the motor continues to pull stronger and stronger on the way up to redline and I also hear the cam changeover, so I know my VTEC system works. But usually when people ask this question it's because they expect to have their head snapped back suddenly at a certain RPM which just isn't the case. Honda couldn't market an engine like that.

I definitely felt a slight pull in my EX. I had the teal green EX coupe, same year as yours. The pull isn't great, but it helps a little on uphill climbs. With about 180K on the motor, I could start to notice it not kicking in as hard as it used to when i had it at 140K hahaha (high miles weaksauce!).

Got about 145k on my b16 with short ram intake. Really dont feel it or hear it change over either. seems like it still has some power though.

You dont have to build a motor to feel vtec, a slightly aggressive cam will do the job perfectly.

Good question. Hell even in my Si there's a noticeable difference, especially on colder nights.

if you don't have money for an intake, you could always remove your air filter. i wouldn't recommend driving with it off for long. it might suck in leaves and what not and send it to your pistons and it'll get all messed up.

Okay, I set myself up for that one, but still, doesn't it go without saying that there are always exceptions to the rule. I was thinking along the lines of the average Joe Honda when I said that (i.e. SOHC VTEC Ds, Si, GSR, Prelude). The stock Type Rs are geared towards a much smaller demographic of people who buy it with intention of track use. On the other hand most VTEC Hondas (even performance oriented models like the Si) are still very practical daily drivers to most people.

nope, i driven a Si but didnt get chance to mash on it. well i about to get some dc headers 4-2-1 and a ebay intake and i am about to straight pipe it, and maybe get it tuned . i want to see how much power i can get out of it. it has 201,000 miles on it. my friends say that the problem is that it probably lost compression beacuse of all the mileage.
