I just bought a pair of CTR cams for my b16. Is it necessary that I buy ITR/CTR valve springs to pair them with?

its not necessary and you should be fine. a stock honda valvetrain will hold stock honda cams

I don't think so. Since the type R cams are more aggressive then you should use the type R springs, which I assume are stiffer. You don't want to float a valve due to the increased lift of the type R cams.

You will be fine with your stock valve springs and retainer's, but it would be better if you got the ctr/itr valve springs and retainers. Just don't rev it like it's a type r.

what about the increased lift of stage 1 and stage 2 cams which do not require an upgraded valve train? type are cams are surely not the equivalent of stage 3 cams. my friend has had CTR cams in his b16a2 with STOCK valvetrain for over 2 years and has not had one single problem.

From a common sense point of view, i think i would just put in upgraded springs/retainers anyways. They ARE upgraded, therefore should be used in conjunction with other upgraded parts...... I don't think anyone should leave a weak link in the chain. I suggest paying the bucks, picking up some ctr's and just doing the job right.
Then you never have to think about it again. You can rev the **** out of it and not be thinking "man, i should have changed those springs".
Just my opinion...

Yeah if you are going to spend the time and money to get Type R cams you might as well spend a little extra to get the springs. Actually you could probably get Supertech springs for close to the same cost. That way if you decide to go with a more aggressive cam later you won't have to upgrade springs again.
