Re: new speedometer discovery!
If your speedometer works when things are toasty warm then that means that something is EXPANDING and allowing either the mechanical portion of the VSS or the wiring of the cluster to make a connection that it cannot otherwise make.
It is simple almost everything expands when heat is applied. Heat is being applied to your entire car when it is hot outside. That means something is EXPANDING as the result of the heat. The real question is, WHAT could expand and contract with temperature and is connected to the speedometer?
Most speedometer/odometer issues are related to the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) which attaches to the transmission and sends a signal back to the speedometer/odometer and ECU telling you what your speed is. Maybe???The VSS wiring is loose at a connection point and when the wires get hot enough they make the connection and send the speed signal. Maybe???The VSS where it connects to the transmission is loose and the mechanical gear/housing does turn and operate properly until the heat of the metal inside the VSS gear swells with the heat and engages the gear....
My bet is if you replaced your VSS with a new one your problem would be solved. VSS connectors are easy to install and only cost about $45-65 if you get them online.
The only other part of your car which would swell and shrink with heat would be the plastic where the wire harness connects to your gauge cluster. But it would have to SWELL a **** ton for the wiring to have connect/disconnect. Plus, you would see problems with other gauges on your dash if the wiring wasn't tight fitting all the time.
My best bet for you is that the VSS needs replacing.
Check this out for the replacement part for speedometer issues:
