New here need engine help

Im new to hondas but not new to the car scene ive been racing cars sice i was 9 (9 years) first mini dragsters and then to a 72 dodge dart swinger with a 318 small block bored .30 over forged pistond edelbrock heads 10-1 compression and so forth i built the car with my dad so im not some new kid to cars. i have some questions what years and models for 96-00 did honda have the d16y8 or the d16a9-a1 did they even have the 16a? i know integras had the a models but not for sure if civic ever got a dohc base if you can help me id appreciate it

well the D16Y8 is out of the civic Si SOHC Vtec and the basic civic of those years had a D16Y7 SOHC non-vtec

since it seems that you are extremely new to the Honda/Acura world i will help you out. if you are looking to go all motor it would be wise to go in the VTEC direction due to the higher compression ratio. the are several motor/ swap options that will be fairly inexpensive and fun DD's. if i were you i would go with an OBD1 vehicle instead of OBD2 because it is an easier system to work with. that leaves you with the EG model (92-95) a gsr/ls integra (94-95) or a del sol . OBD2 would be along the lines of an EK. Any engine can be coverted to the system that you choose to use whether it is OBD1/2. some engine options are a b16a.a1-a3. the b16a is a JDM motor (Japenese Domestic Market). that will be a little more expensive than the b16's found in the del sol and EM1 (99-00) civic si. dont forget the h22 found in the preludes. those motors are all DOHC VTEC along with the b18c1 found in the GsR or the b18c JDM/ USDM b18c5 found in the TYPE R (you will spend crazy money on those motors!... the SOHC motors are aka the D series motors. the d16z6 SOHC VTEC and the d16y8 are pretty much twins. here you can do something called a mini me swap which means you have a non vtec block and a vtec head. these swaps are cheaper but are obviously less power(125hp for the z6 compared to the DOHC which range from 160hp to 200hp stock. if you decide you want to go turbo go with the LS motor from the integra ls. the engine code is b18b1. it has a compression ration of 9.2 to 1 which is perfect for a turbo. another similar engine to that is the b20b/z which is found in the honda CRV and has the same stroke (89 mm) but a larger 84mm bore compared to the ls 81mm. i hope all this helped you and i remember when i was new at this seeking help. pm with questions. your welcome

the only 96-00 civic that had a dohc motor was the 99-00 civic si (for the stateside; sir for the canadians). 96-98 was not offered a dohc motor. the 99-00 civic si came standard with the b16a2 dohc vtec engine.
