Your motor is VTEC, SOHC VTEC that is.
Search around, everything possible has been covered and over as far as motors, price and whats best for you.
Check out http://www.hmotorsonline.com for motor prices to get a general idea.

As far as to mod 1st? Im on my 4th Civic, and Ive always gone somewhat in this order..
- Suspension
- Intake
- CD player/system
- Exhaust
- Rims
Usually intermixed with little **** along the way. After I get the basics I usually swap or build the motor. But suspension is always a good place to start.

Re: New Here (BseriesPWR)
For your D-Series motor you can also go to D-Series.org.....not a bad site but this site owns everyone. Learn all the little technicalities about your car...go buy a Helms for it and read the **** out of it. You will be happier and more confident about doing stuff and your car will thank you....

If you have the money just do the basic B series swap. Your car will feel alot faster than before and its a good platform to start with. B18a or B18b if you are on a tight budget, B16 if you have some money or B18c if you have no budget. Welcome and good luck

A B16 swap sounds like a good idea, though.
But like GTlvr82 said a B18B might be even better for you. It seems like you're new to Honda motors so you don't want anything too complex or too powerful right now. The B18B is a DOHC 1.8L motor..non-vtec. It'll still give you a noticeable increase of hp/tq over your D16 sohc vtec motor. Once you familiarize yourself with your car and your motor, and gain technical and troubleshooting experience with it, you can build an LS/VTEC from it ..and then.. you fly.
