Default New guy, New Car

Hey everyone...

I just joined signed up today... this looks like a pretty sweet board you got going here.

I was hoping anybody out there could help me.... I just bought a black Civic 99 EX coupe, 1.6 liter SOHC 5 speed manual, about three weeks ago. Probably the most fun car I've ever owned. The only problem is, it's slow. When I'm done with it I want it to be a totally different car.
I've only worked on GM cars in the past. For the past year or so I've been helping my brother mod out his 94 Z28. But I wanted to try something new.
problem is, I don't know much about civic high preformance parts.
I've already ordered a "Weapon-R, Dragon intake system." Has anyone used them? Is it worth the $160 I paid? I was planning on doing all the bolt on stuff first.
like the intake and exhaust systems. then maybe underdrive pulleys.
Anybody got any suggestions? Good parts and brands? Well stocked vendors that don't have to special order everthing? future mod ideas?
I'll take any advice I can get.
thanks

Congrads on the new car. The first things you are going to notice about the d16y8 (1.6 sohc vtec) is it doesnt really respond *that* well to mods. So if you really wanna go fast...start out in the right direction.

1. turbo the sohc
2. NOS
3. engine swap -> b-series

hmmm.... well... Turbo and NOS are mods I had planned on down the road.
But you really think I should swap engines? what is the b series?
what cars is it used in?

If you really think that the D16y8 is really slow to even get you around the city, than the next best thing is the B16A engine..

honda has many motor codes...B,D,F,and H series, honda offers sohc, sohc vtec, dohc, and dohc vtec motors.the b and d series motor are exclusive to civics and integras for the years 84 to 00.and the h and f series were exclusive to the accord and prelude platforms.there are mount kits avaiable to get an h series motor into a d series engine bay, so hondas are very flexable.. a lot of people enjoy the thrill of a b series vtec engine such as the b16,b17, b18 and the hybrids b20 and lsvtec. these motors from the getgo are fast and efficiant motors so with minimal bolt ons you can run these motors extremely fast...with your ex platform you could easily purchase a b18c or even a b16a2 and swap it into you coupe with little to no trouble at all..

Truth is, as stated before, I/H/E on your 99 ex(D16y8) will only moderately increase your performance...chances are you will spend thousands of dollars on little things that you may hear might help, but will only decrease the size of your wallet. If you want speed swap with a DOHC engine..examples: B16a,B17,B18c1, or the type-r B18c5. Or you can turbo or supercharge it...IMO turbo will be infinitely better.

untrue, SOHC are as good as any to make power... and funner in the process.. and much more respectable than the common DOHC... swapping isn't original anymore....imo boost is funner than hybrid...but with both you'll obviously have one mean mother ******.... but yer engine is still has low miles (99) so swapping would be a waist of an engine and its hard to sell a d16zy... so just keep the swap money and build it a little then turbocharge it, intercool it and you bee seeing 13(ish) second 1/4 mile times :D

just to give you an idea of price range for all these motor swaps there throwing at you
b16a2 full swap 2400$ (civic Si motor)
b18c1 full swap 3300$ (GSR motor)
h22 full swap 2200$ (prelude motor)
and if you got the big bucks you can get a b18c5 which is an integra type r motor. 5200$+

Thanks for all your advice guys.
I still don't know exactly what I'm going to do though....
I'll porbably still do the bolt on's first and then go to a turbo kit.
while swapping out the engine for a b16a2 would be nice. I don't see how a second cam for exhaust valves will increase my spped enough to justify $2400, and wasting a engine w/ low miles. Not that it't not a good idea for the future....

by the way.... what type of engine did the 84 an 85 preludes have in them?

no offense but the only people thinking they get more respect for a sohc over a b series swap are the ones with the sohc.

you only get my respect when you run a good #, and 99% of the time that ain't with a sohc.

gotta agree with jinx on that one. after turbo-ing my sohc, it wasn't nearly as satisfying as I thought it would be. plus the sohc motor does not handle the abuse as well as the dohc motors. you have a far SMALLER margine of error with them.

If I were you I would first think what kind of performance do you want, and how you are going to drive your car. I'm not going to say what mod will give u the most power or whatever, that has already been said. Just find out what kind of performance you want then make your decision if want to beat your brothers chevy, be the fastest on the quarter mile, run the best time on the autoX, or just have a fast powerful car on the street.

i say f*ck straight line racing, its not what hondas double wishbone suspension was ceated to do. i say you build you little coupe to be a mean *** canyon carver...so that means that you need to fine tune your susp. get your self some teins adj and benen industries strut bars and tie bars all around. your still gonna need a good strong motor to make your passes on the straights so go for a b18...

I couldn't agree with ya more. drag racing is for people who haven't figured out exactly how to use their steering wheel.

But right now I'm pretty happy with my stock suspension. I wanna throw 30, or 40 horses in to it before I even worry about most of that.... however... I am looking for a good strut tower brace.
Anybody got a price and a brand for me?

This guy is a genius!!! (In other words, he thinks just like me )

This man has been enlightened to the fact that 1/4 mile times, although nice, don't mean jack in the realm of WELL-ROUNDED performance!

I agree with spyder.

What is so good about Dragging, just racing for like 10-15 seconds.
I would perfer taking the car into the corners, that will show your true skill at racing.

Its a factor. But a very SMALL factor in a "well-rounded" vehicle.
I stand corrected, it was a hasty statement. Thank you MiGs.
