need some help before i buy this swapped civic
the car is a 94 hatch that the owner bought swapped and doesnt know much about. its either the CX or VX but i cant tell, whats a good way to tell for sure? the can has definetly had alot of work done to it, so just looking for the side view mirror or tachometer (that are there) doesnt really work, as they may have been swapped in.
the block is a ZC definetly, but how do i know about the heads and intake manifold?
the heads say 16v honda, but i cant remember from when i had my 92 si where the vtec solenoid is. any help? the runners on the intake manifold look pretty thin, thats why i thought it might be from the old motor. also a hp on that motor would be cool, although i think its 129hp.
cliffnotes:
what do ZC heads look like?
identifying the ZC intake manifold?
ZC horsepower?
thanks a bunch guys. i'm gonna come to a price on this car tomorrow and i need to figure this stuff out to give him a figure.

the CX is the only model without side trim... so it has a swapped ZC head?... it could be a CX and they wanted more power, so they got rid of the CX (8valve head) and got a 16 valve head.

i remember the valve cover said 16valve honda, and not vtec, and it was a SOHC head. would a 16v cover fit a 8v head?
it may be a cx or vx, i cant remember if it had side trim.
it could be a VX with the ZC block i guess, but i dont know....
also, i looked on the block where it says the engine code and all it said was "ZC", wouldnt it say "D16ZC"?

right. he said the previous owner swapped it, but i'm just trying to figure out how to confirm that.
i do think the block was swapped, its says "ZC" on it, unless its supposed to say "D16ZC" and the guy filed it down and stamped ZC on his old block LOL.
i'm trying to determine now what the heads are, intake manifold, and how to tell if that head is vtec.
thanks so far akunamatta
edit: also, the car has an msd ignition. when i started it, after about 30secs two of the spark plug leads jumped off the plugs. the car still ran good, but def had a misfire once and a while. any ideas on what would cause that?

i believe it is, but i want to know where the vtec spool solenoid is located so i can figure out if the car has just a ZC block, or ZC block and head.
a way to figure out if its the head is the ZC or the vtec-E would be good too.

Re: (hybridmath)
vtec didnt come in till 92 except in the nsx and in 92 the engine was a d16z6 or the jdm d15b vtec but not sure if that was available in 92 the zc is a dohc setup from the 86-89 integra or jdm versions and will not fit on the normal d series block without some serious modifications if it is vtec on d series the vtec solenoid is on the firewall left corner of the head If i am wrong about any of this someone please correct me been at the bar all night and dont wanna give any bad info here lol

well the car is a 94, so theres that, and who knows what the motor is from. wasnt there a later jdm ZC that was sohc, and maybe vtec?
i just found a pic of the vtec solenoid, and it looks like the vtec-e heads have the spark plug wires towards the front. i'll check if the head on this car is vtec and has the plugs tipped towards the back. that'll solve the head issue.
so anyone know if theres a ZC block that'll fit a sohc head?
and if the ZC block just said "ZC" or if it said "D16ZC"?
deleted answered questions from first post. thanks so far guys. i'm going to bed but if anyone can answer the above questions please do so.

Re: (hybridmath)
ok the ZC block code refers to two motors
one is a DOHC built off the D16A1 found it 88-89 Acura Integra USDM and honda civic JDM the only dif in the two was the ZC had 10.1:1 comp pistons and the head was a little different in port work and Cam. also the ZC ran off a PG7 OBD0 ECU and the D16A1 used a PG6. (i had two 88 teg's and a 89 with the ZC and the 89 had the PG7. I also looked online)
the other is a SOHC and is built off the D16A6 Again it's all just Haed and Cam work the rest is the same as the D16A6.

Go to: http://www.carfax.com
Enter in the VIN number, it does not require you to have an account to see the car details. For example;
When I enter in my VIN it gives these details:
VIN 1HG--------------
Year/Make/Model: 1999 HONDA CIVIC SI/SIR
Body Style: COUPE
Engine Type: 1.6L L4 PFI 16V
Manufactured In: UNITED STATES
Search Results: 16 records found in our database

first, the cx and the vx don't have side molding.
second, vtec was available prior to 92 in the b16.
and how is carfax going to tell him what his motor is when he has previously stated that it was swapped? Please read before replying.
why don't you get the serial numbers off the head?
and pictures would make this so much easier.

yeah tell me about it. unfortunately i didnt have my camera with me when i looked at it. i should be coming to an agreement with him today and i'll get some pics.
i believe the motor is the sohc version built off the d16a6 as listed above, but i dont know what that means exactly. is it the sohc ZC block and the a6 head?

Re: (instrument)
I think he giving the guy a way to figure out if it is a CX or VX. *The carfax reference*
Assuming this guy has the title, is should say on that as well...
Unless this car is less than like $1200 I'd be leery of it. a Low hp OBD0 Swap in a EG Hatch really doesn't make alot of sense IMHO You were saying it'd be nice if it has the 129hp ZC, but keep in mind a Stock D16Z6 *SI/EX* has 126, so why not just look for a stock SI or EX and start with a much better platform. Buying a low HP already swapped car is really just not a good idea, again this is just IMHO

yeah hes asking $1500, but doesnt know ish about hondas. hes a vw guy. i'm gonna point out everything thats wrong with it (minor stuff mostly) and offer $1100.
he has the title, and i guess sans original motor it doesnt really matter what model it is.
after looking around all last night and today, i'm leaning towards the motor being the jdm SOHC ZC non-vtec. theres info about it on wikipedia, just seach sohc zc. its 110hp i think, which is more than stock at least. the vtec is 125 or something.
i'll know in a couple hours when i go see the car again, and probably buy it.

Re: (stealth89hatch)
Be sure to checkout what kind of ECU it has in it *Passenger side front carpet, by glovebox* to get a better idea of what motor it may be running *Find a printout online that tells you what ECU's control what engiens* and also like I mentioned before, Check the wiring, cause if thats all Cut you will need to replace a fair amount of wiring to do any other kind of swap.

just got back from seeing it again. he wants $1500 but its needs about $400 worth of work, not including body work and paint to go over the spray paint it has on the rear quarter panels. i offered him $1150 and he didnt take it, but i can wait.
The ECU is a P08. that goes to the obd1 jdm d15. it has a 6800ish rpm limit.
the head is a non-vtec that has the plugs towards the back and says 'pm3' for a casting.
the head looks like this one:
that pic is a non-vtec sohc ZC head, so it may be the correct head for that block, but the ecu listed for that head is listed as needing the pr2 ecu.
the block is the ZC block.
the cluster is the Si cluster with 7200rpm limit. its says 117K but the title doesnt list milage, so who knows what it has.
the title just says civic, not a model civic, and it has no side trim, so it could be either a CX or VX.
any opinions on whats going on?

Re: (stealth89hatch)
At this point, I would walk away, Chances are he thinks because its a "Swapped honda" its worth all this money, but IMHO a OBD0 SOHC ZC Swap in a hatch should be worth LESS than a stock one... Especially if it needs body work, and paint work.....
Lots of other cars out there man! Consider an EF Hatch if your budget is a little tight.
*EFs are very easy to work on, parts are PLENTIFUL, and you can do a DA Integra Engine swap for like $400*

Re: (stealth89hatch)
omg.
1. zc came in dohc and sohc
2. sohc zc's came in vtec and non vtec
3. zc are all jdm
4. who gives a expletive anyways its a pos motor anyways.
5. just because its "swapped" with a zc doesnt mean the car is any faster/better
than a stock motor. basically these are "swapped" for oil burning high mile
engines as a replacement, not an upgrade
88-91 dohc zc and sohc zc
92-95 dohc zc and sohc zc and sohc vtec
