need to replace the D16Z6 in my 94 ex please help

i threw a rod in my 94 civic ex and now i have 2 big holes in the block. i am going to replace the motor since i dont really have the time or money to just buy block and have everything adjusted and or replaced. my motor is a D16Z6 and i am having a hard time confirming which series i can put in my car with an exact fit? also my motor that i am replacing is a vtec motor and i was told that if i put a non vtec motor in my car that my check engine light will go on. can i have some input on what motor series and what years can i put in my car that wont be too much extra work and money?

You can use just about any single cam, I would try to get another z6, or even a y8.

For the Y8 just get the long block, and keep everything off of the z6.

if you can find another d16z6 then that'll go in just fine. I recommend just getting the block replaced, I threw a rod in my 99 EX (d16y8) and im just replacing that. A lot cheaper than just buying a whole nother long block. Really I believe you can put any d-series engine in without a whole lot of problems. a y8 like mine would work, or you could go mpg-saver and get a d15b1, or d15b (jdm). just fyi if you go with a d15 then you'll need the longblock since i dont think a z6 head can fit a d15 block. but im just a noob..good luck on replacing it, im in the same vote as you

any d series will bolt up (88-2000) but for simplicity's sake, I'd just find another d16z6. they're common enough (92-95 Civic Si, 93-97 Del Sol)

so bare with me i just need to understand all of this so that when i go to buy the parts i know what i am talking about.........i just bought a motor that the guy swore he pulled out of a honda civic and the motor was f22b1 which i later found out was for a honda accord..........
so what is the difference between the z6 and the y8?
if i was to keep everything off the z6 wouldnt that mean that i would have to get the valves adjusted? can i put a non vtec motor in the car?

almost anything and everything depending on how much you can spend Any D-series and any B-series
92-95 Civic motors will be a straight bolt-on, no fabrication needed. If you go with a 96+ motor, you will need to convert to OBDII which might cost you more.

z6 is the 92-95 d series vtec, d16y8 is the 96-00 d series vtec. You can put a non vtec motor in it, but why would you put a little extra work (changing ecu) into making less power.

besides that the z6 is ODB1 and the y8 is ODB2... not much is different.

b16 swap into an ex is simple and not too expensive. besides the engine and tranny, your also gonna need some axles and motor mounts. you have the right wiring harness and ecu since ur car is already obd1 and its vtec so no need to buy new ones. your p28 is obd1 and vtec but its for a soch. chip it with a b16 map or get an obd1 b16 ecu from a del sol.

i ask about the non vtec only because i have already lost the $300. that i used to buy the motor that ended up being for an accord is no where to be found. i have a friend that has a civic motor non vtec that he was willing to sell me for a decent price. i know its a newer motor but not sure on the year. also he was willing to sell the transmission and cv axles with it too. i have been to junk yard after junk yard looking for a vtec motor and they are really hard to come across here.
