Well, lately I've wanted to get a little more power out of my b20 powered 6th gen hatchback. It currently has the basic bolt-ons, and is a daily driver - it has to be reliable. In an effort to get more power, I was contemplating a 50 shot on my b20, but recently came across a b16 head for $200.
What would you guys do?
Thanks.
I would look into a b20 vtec setup or a small turbo setup as opposed to either of the listed options.

First of all I'd invest in a keyboard that allows you to type complete words.
Seriously though neither one is going to increase reliability. Nitrous can be safe, but it needs to be used in moderation with a good tune. I've never been a big fan of over revving a completely stock non-VTEC bottom end by slapping a VTEC head on it, so I'd at least think about ARP rod bolts before slapping a VTEC head on.

BTW:
What transmission are you running? This is often overlooked when trying to make a car quicker. Yeah you could make some extra whp with mods, but with a crap-geared LS tranny it won't be nearly as quick as it could be with a shorter geared transmission such as a B16A or ITR tranny with LSD. Keep in kind the LSD won't make the big difference when going straight, but you'll notice the difference in turns.

Srry about the sentences, on my iPod touch. And about the tranny it's a gsr, soon to b itr tranny. Oh and built hatch, it's the head not the motor, and of course I will b changing out the rod bolts. I'm guessing u guys are leaning towards b20 vtec...

Re: Need opinions on goin vtec or nitrous
so annoying! haha
ahh, i see. that makes more sense!
i too am not a huge fan of spinning non-vtec bottom ends to vtec heights, but i've seen so many basically stock bottom end long stroke d-series engines spun relatively high when running a ported head with a big cam. because of that exposure, i think if it's reinforced properly, tuned well, and not beat to all hell you have a fighting chance of staying together and having fun.
i know a b20 is not a d-series, but there is a common theme.

I have rev up b20 vtec up to 9k on the daily withno problems it all depends in how well the engine is assembled IMO

Ya I don't plan on beating the hell out of it only on track days, but it will b tuned and built right. Don't really plan on goin above 7.5k to keep it on the safe side.

Ls and b20/vtecs are well known for not being very reliable unless they are correctly built.
I have seen a few come apart even with rod bolts.
But only turning it to 7.5k isnt to bad, my friend reved his to about 8 every now and then.
It started every time and ran great for about a year. Rod broke at 7ish and you can guess what happend next

Re: Need opinions on goin vtec or nitrous
when i first got spray back in the day (the wrong choice kit actually started me down the path of building my first engine, haha), i sometimes would show up at the local motorcycle dealer twice in one day for refills. they came up with a name for me that was not very nice, but appropriate considering my nasty habit.

Haha, how did it cost to fill a bottle? If I go spray it will b only used for a few runs, I usually only do like 3 or 4 runs wen I go out o tje track, and kit I would use would b the zex dry kit

Re: Need opinions on goin vtec or nitrous
yeah i agree - i'd only use a nitrous express kit at this stage because 1. i'm very familiar with them and 2. they are engineered very well. i know there are some unique dry kits out there but i'd never trust one at this point.
