Default Need an opinion Don't worry this isnt a how much hp will I gain thread!!

I have a 1998 CX with 136,000 milesthat I just bought for $1800 (salvage title) car is in pretty decent shape. and of course it has the non v-tec motor.

I got an email from a guy who is selling a Vtec motor thats still in the car, says it has low miles, $400 if I pull it. Is that a pretty good price or no?

The thing is the motor in my cx runs fine, and I don't want to dump too much cash into it since its a salvage title car. I am already swapping to the EX exhaust due to my cracked exhaust manifold, and will have about $115 invested in the EX exhaust, my engine should be good to go for awhile since the t-belt was just changed too.

but if $400 is worth it, maybe I should pick that up too, he sounded like he might even take less for the motor.

thoughts???

Thanks

well it seems loke a good price usually you can pick up one with super low miles for ~ 800 so go for it if it runs good

Depends on your goals.

If your car is fine and you like the gas mileage and don't care about performance than keep the cx engine and find an ex tranny.

Don't let a salvage title slow you down especially if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time. You could always get to a point where this is only a track car/weekend warrior.

I may sell my wagon for an EK hatch cx or vx strictly to make it a 45+mpg vehicle. I won't care about speed or looks. Just the cheapness. Salvage title preferred being I would put 50 miles a day on it.

My accord wagon gets 27 mpg now and I could get it to 29-30 just by tweaking driving habits. But it already has 260,000 miles on it.
My DB8 has 180,000 but needs a minor overhaul before I keep it or sell it.

Blah blah point being it all depends on what you want to do with the car. No matter what though unless you K-swap it the value will never go up.

thought I'd throw in that he has 2 cars, 1 vtec, non vtec he said the non vtec had low miles, and by low miles he meant 39,000 !!! so I would guess the other is in the same area if he called 39,000 low miles. he said he didnt remember off hand how many miles the vtec had, but he knew they were low too.

I understand, and I did in fact buy it for the gas mileage, I am not a stoplight racer, in fact I am trying to keep it as stock as possible for just a commuter, thats also why I didnt mind the salvage title thing. I put 100 miles on it already and its barely to 3/4 tank !!

I dont even mind the gears in it now, why would the ex tranny benefit? That would probably hurt my gas mileage ,right?

and is the ex that much worse on gas??

I used to own a 94 EX 4 door and could manage 34-36 freeway, but that car had a/c p/s plus its heavier than a hatch.

I just thought for the price it may be worth it in case the motor in the car goes bad. but it is a honda, and I know they seem to run forever, so I could end up with a large paperweight in my garage too!

thats why I wanted some opinions,

I can be kind of an impulse buyer sometimes!

39k is low miles. Especially if its coming out of a 98-00 based on even 10k a year thats low. The norm is around 12k maybe higher.

And a salvage title car is not a bad thing. Honda's last forever so you will get your money's worth, they are just bad if you are trying to turn it around to make money. I would easily take a salvaged(theft/accident). Most of the time the frame isnt damaged, and all parts that have either been stolen/damaged have been replaced. It just carries a bad "rep"

this hatch I have has no frame damage, someone backed a pickup into the front end just fast enough to pop the air bags and make the grill disappear, also scrunched the hood up a little, you can't even tell from like 20 feet away, but the clowns decided to claim it on insurance, you know the rest.

For a complete engine carrying a price tag of $400 I would imagine we are talking about a D16Y8

If you want a 300 pound paper weight buy it. If you have two cars and both hondas then you would have a back up motor in case ****.

I would love to find a 98ish cx hatch for 2000 completely stock and if it had a title period would be good.

Good luck.
