Need to know's when purchasing a used engine ....
What should I know/do before I go abouts purchasing an engine off of someone's car?
i've taken a test drive in it and the motor is strong and running fine.
1) will I just need to do a compression test, leak down test and vin backup check?
2) Also, are the VIN numbers on the car the same as the ones on the engine and tranny?
3) What exactly does 'papers' consist of?
since this is a private sale I need to know, thank you all for helping!

most important, make sure its legit. ask for reciepts, check oil, the vin # is the one on the tranny, the block number in under the B??? marking. you should have the axles, ecu, shiftlinkage, mounts, wire harness, motor and tranny

as far as paper work goes, get a copy of his pink slips, then write a bill of sales saying "I__________ am selling (year of engine and type) from (year of the car and type) to (your name here) for (amount) date it also
both of you guys print and sign your name, plus dont forgetthis
WRITE THE BLOCK # ON THE BILL OF SALE
this way, if the guy ever get his next motor stolen you can prove that you bought yours from him legit!

MAke him write the VIN number in his handwriting.
Better yet, make any variables like name and address written by you for yours and written by him for his. This will help proove the document hasnt been faked.
Get a copy of the title if you have it, or the registration is fine as well.
Make sure the vin numbers match the firewall and dash.
Make sure the purchase amount is written on the bill of sale.
