Need help troubleshooting clutch/tranny
Hello,
I have a 93' civic with a manual tranny. I was screwing around in some sand. The clutch started smoking then the car just stopped moving.
I can move the shifter through the gears with or without pressing the clutch. No grinding or anything. Any idea whats broken or how I could learn more about the problem?
Thanks,
Jason

Thank you for the reply. I'm not a very experienced mechanic. Are there any other ways to identify the problem before pulling the tranny?
Thanks,

turn the car on and see if you can shift between all gears. is so put it in first and see if i will move if not then clutch might be burnt. look under the car see if shiftlikage is not hainging down pump the clutch with the car off and have a friend see if the slave cylinder is moving the clutch fork side to side. let me know what u find.

Ok, So the clutch was toast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xHxQ19rH5I
Got a new clutch kit and flywheel. Got it mostly on. 2 bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel sheered the head off at less than 20ft lbs.
So Im going to try to get all new pressure plate to flywheel bolts. Think I can get those from the dealership?
Ever seen a clutch turn to a pile of fiber like that? What makes it fail in that manner?
Thanks,
Jason

Yeah, the dealership should have pressure plate to flywheel bolts. And that motor mount you can fill it up with polyurethane to make it more stable (don't overfill it though or there will be a lot of vibration in the steering wheel, dash, and all over the car).

Travis, Hmm well I got the car used, but I do drive like a moron :D
civic_driver, Thanks, so that motor mount looked to be in poor shape to you?

Howdy,
So I orderd 6 new bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel from the dealership.
All they could tell me about the bolts is they are 8mm - 12 point. However, the ones I pulled out are 10mm - 12 point. Should this worry me? I'm just concered about time.

The Bolts I pulled Out: 10mm - 12 point - 10(8-1.25)
Thanks,

Re: Need help troubleshooting clutch/tranny
Hello,
So my bolts came in. Got the clutch and tranny in place. I'm having a problem with the half shafts though. I got them almost all the way in. I have a small gap though where the half shaft meets the tranny. On one side it about 1/8" on the other about 1/4". Is this gap too big? Might my car seat itself a bit more when I drive? If no, how can I get rid of the gaps?
Thanks,
Jason

OK, been a week and a half without my car. Can someone PLEASE tell me what is an acceptable gap between the end of the half shafts and the transmission? Im worried about getting grime into the transmission.
Thanks,

Re: Need help troubleshooting clutch/tranny
when you put the axles back in, did the snap??? The axles have a ring on the end that fits into a groove in the xmission, if it didnt snap in then it doesnt matter about the gap.

Re: Need help troubleshooting clutch/tranny
Thanks for the reply thi3v3z. Im pretty sure they snaped in and made it past the little clippy thing. So crud wont get in my tranny through the 1/8"-1/4" gap?
Thanks,

Re: Need help troubleshooting clutch/tranny
no, theres seals around the shaft, and also that clip is in there very tight ,nothing will get by it. And youd know if they snapped in or not, cuz they are not easy, it takes alot of force to get them to snap in. Thats the worst part of puttin a xmission back in. Hopes this helps

you may have stripped the axles or spline inside the trans.
