Default Need help with timing light question. ASAP!!!

Alright when i check for ignition timing i have to jump the service checker. But when i jump it i get code 43. Do i have to get rid of the code first or will it work the same with the code flashing. Also what mark lines up with the needle on the timing cover. Also i was reading in my chilton's and it said for automatics you have to check the ignition timing in drive? If so i can't do it without someone else. Boo...
