Default Need help with speedometer in 92 Hatch

I recently bought one of those digital speedometers for my car. Everything works pretty good. The speed is pretty accurate (probably off by 1-2 mph). My question is that ever since I installed it my car I get a CEL for VSS after driving a few miles. And when I disconnect it, the CEL does not come back on. Well the gauge only has 4 wires: ignition, ground, dimmer, and speed sensor signal. I originally tapped right into the signal from the speed sensor right off the tranny. I thought it was probably too close and probably messed with the signal or volts. So I then moved the signal wire behind the cluster and still same thing. I just want to know is there a way to get this thing to work without throwing a code. Thanks in advance
