or buy oil filter pliers that allow you to "grasp" the filter.

ive had to do the screwdriver thing before. along the same lines, just so you know oil filters are NOT supposed to be put on very tight. most filter manufacturers suggest 1/4 to 1/2 turn after the gasket makes contact with the flange. it should NEVER take more than your hand to remove a properly installed filter. definitely not trying to talk down to anyone, ive just noticed that this is not common knowledge. good luck

insert flat head screwdriver in the side of the filter if you need to tap it in with a hammer. you will have some oil coming out but once you put the screwdriver though it then turn it like you would a wrench comes right off and for next time make sure not to make it to tight.

i use a pair of channel locks(bigger set) and crush the end of the filter with it a little and turn slowly. always come off.

Just use the screw driver method. It'll get messy, but at least it will work.

"The Crusher":

Its jaws clamp around the end of the filter and get tighter as one applies more torque to twist the filter off. I needed one of these twice in 20 years.

IMO the absolute easiest way is tightening a C-clamp onto the oil filter. It works like a dream every time. I've tried the screwdriver method before and sheared the end of the oil filter right off (because piercing it weakens it too much)

Yeah, that's happened to me, too, though I've also had successes with the screwdriver trick. Just don't rush it, that's when sheering usually happens.

If I can't get it off with my hands (which is rare) get steel sand paper or skate board grip tape. Put some grip tape on it and it'll come right off (usually).

Filters always wind up too tight b/c pple put 'em on there too tight to begin with, I'd say a filter wrench is your best bet, not necessarily filter pliars, just something like this:
http://upscaleauto.com/Oil%20Filter%20Wrench.JPG

(the mouth slides over the filter, and you turn it with a socket (size varies a bit).

It'll work every time, it's cheap as hell, and you can buy it same day at autozone.

X? on the screwdriver method, I always dip a finger in the old oil and lube up the seal on the new filter so this doesn't happen when I'm doing oil changes.

I always do that like it says on the outside of the box and still sometimes the filter is too tight! Good thing I got the oil filter pliers.
