Default Need help on preventing further rust.

I'm getting ready to pick up an EG hatch. It has the usual over the rear fender rust. A 2-inch hole above each wheel...
I'm not going to be able to fix it until spring, as it will be a winter beater before it becomes a project.

I'm just wondering if there are any reccomendations as to prevent rust from starting in the bottom of the seam, behind the doors, as it seems like that's where the water would collect.

Could I spray some oil in there, or would Krylon rust-preventer, or WD-40 work?

Any suggestions would be great.

It is my understanding that if you can see rust at all, then it is much worse than it looks. As far as stopping it, seal that hole up and primer it.

yup seal it up + primer and i would add some paint so it wont look too bad.

Yeah, I plan on replacing both rear quarters in the spring.

I just want to keep it from growing over the winter...

you can inject waxoyl behind the panel which will stop it... also you could be adventurous and connect some zinc/mangnesium electrically to the panel. As long as it makes good electrical contact with the steel it will preferentially corrode... don't believe me? thats how they stop steel pipes etc in the sea from rusting.. as soon as the sacrificial metal is gone the pipes rust instead. The hardest bit is getting a good permenant electrical connection...

thats a funny and good idea. That little skeg at the bottom of an outboard is sacrificial magnesium i believe. no?

I'm not sure about outboard engines but I expect you are correct, I know that the newer land rovers use aluminium panels with steel connecting plates, this sets up an electrical cell in the presence of water containing ions (eg salt water) which actually promotes the rusting of the steel sections...seems a bit of an ironic idea they choose to use them!

Because I don't want it to rust out the insides of the fenders, or through the floor/side of the car by holding water.

That's a thread I did on PREVENTING rust... it will work equally well for stopping rust progress (sort of)...

However I should add somethings since you are already rusting...

A. POR-15... look it up... it's pretty sick... I've used it a little over a year ago on some things and NON of them are rusting (neither is my buddies 70 impala that got a GOOD dose of that stuff to stop rusting)
B. There are SEVERAL companies that sell boxes which supply a NEGATIVE charge to the body which stops ALL rust from continuing (there are one's that simply ground the body which work but not as well as one's that supply NEGATIVE VOLTAGE.

Here is a link to a site about rust prevention...

http://www.ruststoponline.com/....html

Search here and google.. you'll find LOTS of stuff.

i'm not sure if you can but Waxoyl in the states, in england it is a popular way of stoppping rust as you can get kits to inject/spray it into awkward places.. i am sure there are other alternatives..NonovUrbizniz seems to have some good ideas...magnesium/zinc will effectively supply a negative charge...anything with an electrode potential less that iron will also work, anything higher will promote rust... check this table if you want to know more..i'm a little rusty on chemistry so i can't explain much more without researching..
