If your LAF sensor is original, it might need to be replaced.
You should try the troubleshooting procedure from the Helm manual if you're worried about it. The first test is to drive in 3rd gear @ 1500 rpm for a couple of minutes after the engine is warmed up. If the LAF is bad, the CEL will come on during this test. If not, the LAF still works but might just be "sluggish".
More often than not, a code 48 indicates another problem in the engine such as an exhaust leak, vacuum leak, or engine misfiring that triggers the code. How do I know this? I have a 92 VX and have had a code 48 pop up a couple of times the past year. I corrected an exhaust leak and an ignition related misfire that took care of the code 48.

Since when do civics have a "lean air fuel" sensor? Im pretty sure you just get the code when your 02 sensor reads too lean. If the sensor is reading too lean, chances are its something having to do with fuel delivery or ignition, rather than a faulty 02 sensor. If your 02 sensor was faulty it would give that code as well.

The VX has a lean burn engine (D15Z1), and has an 8 pin LAF sensor, it calculates actual AFR, not O2 content.
If that LAF harness is not hacked up, inspect it for loose wires or burned up wires. Otherwise replacement will normally be required. If you suspect a wiring problem, post back and I will provide all the tests.

Re: need help with LAF sensor! (slowcivic2k)
well it was never a problem when i drove it around in 3rd and at 1500, so my only assumption is when i put premium for 2 tanks then switched back to regular, but also i do have a exhaust "leak" in the piping, its more a big *** hole than a leak. so weather or not thats a factor i dunno, but it never came back on sense i posted this thread so i dunno guys.

i got a vx motor too but i swapped it into my 94 ex coupe.. and im getting the same code, i opened up the egr and theres a lot of carb build up if i cleaned it and the pcv sensor do you think that would fix it? im also getting a lot of choking as if the engine is about to die on me, i checked the timing and everything seems fine.. any ideas on how to check this?
