Need help with jumpy idle and setting ignition timing
I've search dozens of threads and the FAQ sections and still have yet to find what I need.
My manual came up missing and I need to reset the idle on my newly installed Y5/Y8 hybrid. Its very jumpy now, fluctuating between 1200 and 1800 sometimes. Not sure what's causing that, but the only code its throwing is 22 (vtec pressure valve). I've reset the idle before, but I just don't remember the whole procedure.
Second, I have the timing set so the bolts that hold the distributor on are in the middle of the slots and I'd like to get it dialed in more accurately. Is it as easy as just warming up the engine and twisting the distributor until its at TDC?
I know this info is here somewhere, but I just haven't been able to find it.
Thank,
Gator

Re: Need help with jumpy idle and setting ignition timing
assuming your timing is correct yes it is that easy. turning one way will advance and the other will retard it. you need to retard it. i would start it and turn the distributor until idle drops or makes a significant change. then let car warm up to operating temp and see where its idling, then adjust dist. accordingly. that way it will idle there when warmed up. you want it to idle at about 500 -700 rpms at operating temp. but if idle is bouncing youve got other problems that need addressed first. which i should be able to help with.

Re: Need help with jumpy idle and setting ignition timing
Guess I should have clarified. Idle is surging. Sometimes its a bigger span than 1200-1800, but that's typical. Seems to jump a little less when the ac is on & also when its cold. Sometimes it runs steady, but that's very rare. Today I unplugged the IACV and the idle dropped to 500-700, but still surged quite a bit. The harness is from an auto, so the IACV was spliced on. The ecu is a P28, 5 spd, Y5 with Y8 intake and exhaust manifolds. Other than the idle & jerkiness below 1500 rpm, this combo runs really well. Thanks for your help.

Re: Need help with jumpy idle and setting ignition timing
Bleed your coolant system. Put the front of the car on jack stands, remove the radiator cap, start the car. Let it run for 3 radiator fan cycles (turn on, turn off, turn on, turn off, turn on, turn off). While doing this, keep your radiator full. You probably still have air pockets, which will cause a fluctuating idle.
To set your ignition timing, you need a timing light. You can't just fiddle with it until it "seems right". You can do this immediately after you finish the coolant flush, since that process will warm up your engine. You can't do this until you have idle properly set, though.
