need help deciding on what program for chipped p28
need some help everyone im installing my skunk2 IM very soon once i get all the parts to get it running agian.. in the mean time im going to have my p28 ecu chipped.. here is my setup
94 civic hatch
98 b18c1 motor ran as obd1
Skunk2 IM
DC sports SS headers
AEM Cold Air intake
Apexi Dunk catback (soon to be replaced w/ thermal)
Apexi VAFC for tuning
ZEX kit (in the near future)
what chip should i get? i was checking out hyperducktuning.com and saw the J's Racing program which looked nice, and also the Skunk2 program.. having vtec set at specific point isnt a big deal cause i have vafc, i do want a rev limit just incase.. and is it true that most chips take away the speed limitor as well, not a big deal cause im never going to go 150 mph thanks

You haven't even considered kenji's "custom" ITR chip?
With that SK2 manifold and his chip, you'll fall in love. Your car will rip. Rev limiter is 9100, there's no speed govern either. It is rich though.. and he says a VAFC + tuning will get even more power from it.

Even with a VAFC whatever chip you decide to go with I would make sure the vtec kicks over about 5200 for best power, anything lower and it seems to almost bog.

i ran the mugen program and that was good. I just switched over to the skunk2 program and they are almost idetical except at vtec. skunk prog. hits a little harder at vtec. If you want the prog. my friends sell them. They can bump up[ the redline or do whatever you want to the program. For instance, the skunk program's redline was 8900, which i didnt like. So they bumped it up to 9500. hit me up if you want it.

I will only work with SK2 progs... Look for a ROM/EPROM with a VTEC x-over ~5500rpm then get a CTR/2000+ ITR IN cam... I've worked with PYR, Mugen, Spoon and I hate them all... I personally think their fuel/timing mapping is ****... Just my $0.02... Good Luck

Since we're on subject here..
What is in a chip exactly? Fuel maps? I thought the timing was not part of the chip. Can timing be altered by chipping the ecu? Or does the timing work along with the fuel mapping automatically?

i'm about to start gettin into the business of chipping ecu, and i found alot of information about them.
i dont think it has anything to do with timing of the car. its mostly the maping of the car.
whats a ThunderRev? haha
chips are easy to program, its just like playstation and ps2 mod chips.
for your setup i would just go with a mugen chip, its for drag racing.
skunk2 is for track
Feel's program is good too.
if you get ecu, would recommend gettin cam shafts instead of NOS.
it would use the most potential of the ecu.

honestly i dont think you need a chip if you have your vafc tuned. they will sort of cancel themselves out. my $.02

It does have control over the timing of the motor... That didn't make any sense what you just said about it, "it doesn't control the timing" but "it DOES control the mapping" Just as when you're working with Hondata, etc. you have your low cam fuel/timing maps along with your high cams... This is all programmed into the EPROM which controls a number of things... If you ever wanna test this and your ROM is socketed pull it out... Your ECU will run in limp mode and the motor will feel like ****... As for the Mugen proggy, do what you want... I still hate that **** and will always recommend SK2 (which is NOT just an on road prog)... If you wanna have tuning capabilities of a VAFC + more just go with an S200 system... The one thing a VAFC DOESN'T allow you to control is the timing maps, which is very important on say a turbo car... Build that B18C, chip your P28 just as you normally would, get a EEPROM, a CN2 connector, Hondata, and you'll be set... Good Luck

i dynoed few programs on simliar setup (my old setup: jdm b18c/skunk2 IM/itr cam/h/e = 183whp/127lb/ft torque)
-skunk2/mugen/pyr = all made simliar power within 1-2whp of each other, either of the three runs rather rich in most conditions for mild setups
-j's racing = again very simliar as far as power but alot less fuel consumption then the above trio. fuel/ignition maps borrowed from ITR setup make it a good compromise.
-superchips = slightly improved Euro P30 program (b16a), again same power as above, but runs rather lean.
ECUs/programs that really sucked were:
-spoon
-jdm p72 ecu/program
-jdm p30 program
anyways vtec/rev limit can be set and customized on almost all chips.
one of my older dynos without skunk IM and few other parts, no tuning, no cam gears.
my old dyno of b16a motor chip compare (all stock with ECU/h/e and airbox/w)
