need help b18c
I just picked up this engine this week to swap into my ek hatch. I thought i would go ahead and replace all the seals and gaskets along with the water pump before i put it in. after i removed the head this is what i found. Would anyone know why there is such a build up of carbon or my valves and pistons..........could the rings be gone? if anyone could shed some light on this and tell me why it is so bad i would very much appreciate it. thanks

Re: need help b18c (allsho)
Yours is worse than mine. My b18c had oil in the cylinders and a fair amount of carbon buildup. I think the oil was from a compresson test and the carbon was from crappy gasoline. Steve from Hmotors told me that all of the motors that come from japan look like this because their gas sucks. Cleaned right up after running water through the engine and driving it hard for 500 miles. Running small amouts of water through the engine will remove carbon buildup.

Re: need help b18c (stock_honda_coupe)
if you want to replace everything you should just send your head out get it hot tanked and stuff and have the builder just rebuild the head for you with your stock stuff minus the old seals and hey maybe port it out or have the head milled and bump up that comp ratio or new flat top valves
oh so many idea's

Thanks for the help guys. I was now wondering if I just cleaned the tops would I still burn oil or should I just get new pistons and rings?

Re: (allsho)
you could just reassemble your motor an run some seafoam thru it, the valves look ok... throw some type r pistons in if you feel like it while you have it apart, if the compression test was ok, i would just run it, it all depends on our budget... i did a complete rebuild on my b16 and it was costly... i say do what you can afford... just do it right

Re: (hondamilitiaeg6)
Yea, stupid me didnt do a compression test. So I just dont know what to do, I am thinking about putting it back together and see how much it puffs any maybe when the funds are more available then redo it, I live in Canada and have never heard of "seafoam". Does anyone here know where I could get some ie. shop, online? Thanks
