I drive a 2000 civic cx, d16y7, about 80k on the clock

in any gear, from 2200-2500 rpm's there is a constant noise coming from the engine/under the car, the front

its sort of a grinding noise, but it sounds smoother than a grind, the best way to describe it is it sounds like 2 smooth metal discs spinning opposite each other then lightly touching

it kicks in at exactly 2200 rpm's and is constant to 2500 rpm's then it just goes away. doesnt happen at any other rpm and it happens in all gears

i'm sure its not the engine because it does NOT make the noise when i rev it with the clutch in or in neutral. only when the car is in-gear and the wheels are spinning

also, in 2nd or 1st at a low speed i'm guessing the transmission is very loud. it sounds like a typical engine brake noise only its pretty loud. best way to describe it is gears turning with no lubrication

transmission fluid was replaced with REDLINE MTF about 25-30k miles ago

same problem here. im thinking it has something to do with my timing being maybe slightly off - i just did a timing belt/water pump change. mine sounds like that if i give it gas, starts around 2k rpms. or could be my crank pulley, its got two chunks taken out of it. ill wait for someone else to chime in, im quite a noob with hondas

thats good, i hope its something like that, i'm driving alot more now, 2+ hours a day of mostly highway and i'm usually right around 3k, i dont want to do damage

when u put the clutch in does it still make the noise?

no. with the clutch in or in neutral it does not.

Have you checked the exhaust heat shields?

I know that my girlfriend's 97 DX has a slight rattle through the shifter that you can hear only when the car is under load at lower RPM. It's not very loud, but it sounds exactly like what you described. My 94 EX also does this too. Both cars are manuals. I'm going to be replacing the shifter bushings in her car soon and see if it goes away.

i had this same problem. it is the brake dust shield. its a thin metal behind the brake rotor if u bind it it rubs on the rotor this was my noise.

really? i considered that, but it doesnt make sense that its only in that specific RPM range and no other time

whats the remedy? just bend the brake shield?

If it's RPM related I really can't imagine it being the brake dust shield. I could see if it was vehicle speed related but in this case it's not. Also, I know the brake dust shields aren't rubbing on the girlfriend's car because I just inspected the brakes.

Have you thought about checking your Alternator? Mine made a metal on metal noise that turned out to be the Alternator around the same mileage.

this is very difficult to diagnose. i might have to jack the car up and gas it up and find out exactly where the noise is coming from

well mine was constant when it was the brake dust shield. u would hear it loud at 10mph like u had a bad brake pad and it was draging. but if its only in the rpms then jack it up and check it. start it and rev it in 1st gear. make sure in use jack stand and pull e brake and something in the rear tires lol.

Mine only did it when the engine revving, especially while the transmission was engaged. If I pushed in the clutch and revved the motor a bit I would still hear it.

It sounds more like a drivetrain issue than anything.

It could very well be the alternator as I had to rotate mine forward, then I started hearing this. My battery light goes on when I stall or bog too

Many times it's a loose bolt somewhere on your engine or exhaust. If there's a washer on it, it'll rattle at consistent engine rpms.

probabaly your best bet, it could be so many different things its hard to say. you said it stopped when you pushed your clutch in. does it stop when you are in motion and push the clutch in? if it only did at a certain rpm no matter moving or not i would reley be looking somewhere around the tranny clutch back of motor area. any way jack it up adn get someone to help make the car do it while you look.

It sounds like a problem that i was having in my 97 ex, at first i thought it was the throw out bearing, found that good and then was told that it was my input shaft. Never fixed cuz i did a swap but the guy that i sold it to said that fixed the problem. Could really be anything though.
