mystery engine problem
ok here the deal, i have a 98 ex coupe and lately the engine has been sputtering speraticly. i have done pretty much everything i can think of and i have not had any luck in resolving this. so here are the details
with the engine under light load ( .25 to .50 throttle ) in the 2000 to 3000 rpm range the engine starts to sputter like its starved for fuel. once out of the range it runs fine. this issue only seems to show up after i have been driving the car for a while. like the 45min comute on the highway to work. if the engine is cold i have not heard or notice this issue. also not sure if it related or not. but when the engine is warm like after my comute and its idling every so often it sputters once ( kinda like a misfire ) but then it won't do it again for like a minute.
so with that said these are the things that i have done to try and fix it.
new plugs
cleaned cap and roter
new o2 sensor
new fuel filter
checked timing
reset ecu
im hoping that some one here might be able to help me on this. i think that i have been fighting the issue so long that i need a fresh set of eyes (or thoughts). im planning to recheck the values and make sure they are adjusted once i find a feeler gauge. if i find any thing i will update but any ideas or if you have had this problem please help a honda head out!!!

Re: (Steven.)
levels are fine last i checked but i will recheck. car is not over heating though. i just finished reading that tread when you replied. car idles pretty normal cept for that random hicup.
as far as like things that have changed that could have caused this.
the only major thing i have done was at the begining of the spring i swapped in a new ex tranny and clutch and did a timing belt and water pump and valve adjustment.
hench my thought on rechecking the valves.

wow...sounds exactly like the problem I bought my car...changed plugs, wires, everything was peachy...
You said you changed the plugs and the cap...but I don't see anything in there about wires...did you leave them out or did you not change 'em?
If you didn't change 'em, change 'em, because this is the EXACT problem I had with my '95 EX when I bought it that new plugs/wires fixed...

Re: mystery engine problem (rewhipple)
Sound like an EGR problem to me. Im not sure but im guessing there vacuum assisted on your car. Pull the vac hose and see if it still does it.

all p2j heads have egr...they share the same casting...
the hx is the only model using the egr intake manifold to make use of it
the rest are just blocked off
depending on the year/market...some egr valves are vacuum assisted...
some are purely electrically controlled

Re: mystery engine problem (digitalcongo)
well at the moment it appears that the wires were the cause of all of my headaches. i replaced them two days ago and i have not had a single problem ( knock on wood )
