Yeah, so there really isn't a point to this thread but i've had a long weekend and i figure i'd share what I was doing. My transmission was leaking oil from the flywheel cover. The general consensus was rear main seal, but other possibilities were axle seals and oil pan gasket. Last weekend I replaced the axle seals and oil pan gasket, but yet the leak was still there...so this weekend...it was party time with the rear main seal

Transmission, clutch, flywheel all off...about 5 hours worth of work


My driveway was a mess...I was checking the input shaft seal in the tranny to make sure that wasnt the problem...and it wasnt...so all of this for nothing

Oil + Clutch = hotspots! (this flywheel was newly resurfaced 2 weeks ago )


The clutch housing side of the transmission was COVERED in oil...even worse than the block side. But 6 cans of brake cleaner later, and everything is good. Didn't finish tonight, but hopefully the bitch will be running sometime later this week. And i'll even have some pics of the two slave cylinders I broke!!!

didnt change the rear main seal when u had the flywheel resurfaced 2 weeks ago?

i didnt have a weekend to waste, so i had to pay $300 for someone to put in my clutch and replace my rear main at the same time

sorry to hear about that dustin. was the clutch all glazed over like i thought? if you got a pic of the clutch id like to see. sorry to hear. good luck. keep us up to date. hopefully youll be able to get back in the 15's

HAHAHAHA, Dustin, your car sucks. It's because D-series motors are the worst evAr!! Hopefully we can get this piece of **** running again tomorrow night after a long day of class/work...

Heh yeah. I did read though that overtorqued flywheels can cause bad rear main seals, so that might have been a problem but who knows.

My bro just had his clutch replaced on his VW Corrado and the shop didnt put the main seal in correctly. It leaked and screwed flywheel and his sachs clutch

i just replaced went through the same repairs you did 2 weeks ago.. main seal, axle seals, and oil pan gasket.. let me tell you, its a dirty job but i was sick of seeing oil underneath my car whenever i backed out of a parking spot.. same weekend i replaced the clutch and flywheel on my friends integra gsr so i had a lotta fun layin on the garage floor that weekend...

My oil's leaking from somewhere as well. I dunno where it's coming from though. I think it's my oil pan gasket so I'm gonna have that replaced this weekend. While I was at meineke, the guys there said it was the rear main seal possibly. Is there a way to tell if it's the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal?

I know what you mean about having a bad main seal, mine went to **** and caused all my oil to leak out under hard driving and told my bearing on number 2 to eat a fat one.

Engine siezed after the bearing snapped in two.

Do what I did. Replace the oil pan gasket, if it still leaks, replace the rear main seal.

Haha, nah. I figure i'd post this and then if anyone has questions i can help. But this is not going to be a writeup...too long and its just general maintenance that you can find in the helms.

Is replacing the Rear Main Seal "General Maintenance" as you put it when replacing Clutch/Flywheel? ...like replacing the water pump when doing your timing belt because you have it all apart?

put your car on the jacks and strart it up, you should see where it's leaking from.

bauley - once the tranny & flywheel are off, do you have to remove any other stuff to replace that seal? or does it just pop out?

i have a tiny leak from my car, and i suspect that it is the seal.
