i have a 98 civic lx with 87,000 miles on it. my check engine light went on so i brought it to a repair shop he said i had a bad spark plug. I told him thats impossible i replaced them 10,000 miles ago. He showed me them and they were all black but didn't smell like gas. So he replaced them and my check engine light was still on and also to mention my idle speed is very rough and i have lack of power also even before we switched out the spark plugs. So we did a compression test and found out 1,3 cyclinders or pistons (sry i dont know) is only giving 85lbs compared to 125 that it should be. So then he concluded i needed a new head gasket now i dont think so bc my cars not overheating temperture is in middle, no white smoke from tailpipe and no sweet smell any ideas? also i had all the carbon cleaned out he thought it might have be a fuel injector clogged.

retest the compression on the low cylinders after adding a little engine oil in through the spark plug hole (about 1 tsp). If your compression goes up then you have bad rings. If it doesn't come up then you might have valve problems. Do a leak down test and see what happens.
