Default is it my head gasket???

Over heating on hills.... bubbles and gushing radiator when cap is off and it is idling... some brown scumb on the radiator cap.... but i have good compression in all cylinders and no white smoke... i am guessing the head gasket has breached the oil and water jackets but not the cylinders???? what do you think?

headgasket or waterpump

I've always been told to check for a blown headgasket take the radiator cap off and start it and if it goes everywhere its your headgasket.

just my .02

there is no antifreeze in the oil... but there is possibly some oil in the antifreeze

i drove it 14 miles to work today... and then out for a 30 minute run at lunch...
it drove super on both trips, and the gauge never got over the normal spot.... even over the mountain i have to cross.... this thing is frustrating

headgasket leak could just mean that the exhaust gasses are leaking from the head gasket and heating up the coolant in the passages ... really bad leak, will put oil in coolant and vice versa

in a nutshell: head gasket symptom doesn't always have to include white smoke (I've blown 2 headgaskets w/o white smoke)

well it ran fine to work this morning and then out for lunch... on a trip to the cigarette store after work....
but then on the way home i got stuck in traffic... several red lights

and the it got in the red.... once i got it on the freeway, i expected it to cool off... but it didn't... but then i remebered reading about turning the heater on... and that worked... i got it home....and the over flow was tube was putting bubbles in the over flow bottle.... and there was antifreeze
behind the passenger head light..(i don't have a lid on the over flow bottle...)

so i am going to change the thermostat... flush the coolant and get a new radiator cap... then if i still have it... maybe i will do a mini me head swap...

i have a d15b7 now...and i would like to find a nice Bseries and do a whole motor swap... we'll see.... funds are tight here for a while...

The only way to test if its a head gasket leak is to actually get a cylinder leak down tester. I bet it will bubble the coolant after that.

Honestly if its getting close to the red you better stop and check.. you can warp the head and make your head gasket change in to a new head or you might have to get it fixed at a machine shop if they can fix it.

i let my car idle for about 2 minutes... and behind the muffler was a patch of
gravel that was powder coated in black soot... the rocks smelled like kreosote
that builds up in wood burning stoves...

i don't know if it is related but i have a weird idle that run's from 2200, down to 800 and back up...
in a rythm....

sorry for the no link url's but geocities won't allow the quick links... copy and paste Thanks

i feel pretty sure i fixed my over heating problem...

turns out it was my radiator fan... i took the iacv off last night,,, and cleaned it... hooked everything
back up to see if i fixed my idle woes... and then i was letting it idle... and i noticed the radiator fan
was not on... but i thought... ok it has not warmed up yet.. that is no big deal...

but it got very heated and the fan never came on... so shut it off right away... I check the motor and the
fan runs when i wired it to the battery...

where is the fan relay, and what does it look like... the haynes manual says it is in the left fron of the engine
bay, but it did not picture it.

I wired it up to the other fan for a quick fix, and i am just running the A/C today... i ran the car very hard this morning
and the temp never moved above the normal spot... i really feel like this was my whole over heating problem....

If that is it cool, if it isnt park the car. IF you keep letting it overheat your going to warp the head and/or block. Then you will have to pull the motor to deck the block and head. PAIN in the ***. I dont see how it could be the fan though. IF it was the fan when you were on the highway it should of cooled down because alot of air was moving over the radiator. But if you did fix it...congrats man.

well we'll see... i really think it is it... when i say over heat i am saying the temp gauge got high... not exactlly in the red...(although it did get in the red once in red light traffic on a hot afternoon)

but it would over heat up a hill... but cool down on the other side...

and the one time it over heated in red light traffic... i was able to cool it
down using the heater core and putting the blower motor on high once i got moving.

i am having the same problem as you are.. took off my thermostat and the mechanics i've talked to told me that if it still overheats. it's the head gasket... i'll check the fan now... since u gave me the idea

..but i always thought when my temp gauge went up close to red that my fan was delayed in turning on...

let me know if u fixed your problem.. and i'll post if i fix mine..

tnx.....
