Default My gas mileage went off after new plugs and such

Hi guys,

I have a 95 1.5ex with 273K on it. It's my DD and runs good. I had a miss under load in 5th gear and it got worse till it was in all the gears under accelleration. I pulled the plugs and they were really worn. So I got a middle of the road price wise NGK platinum and a set of 10.5mm wires off ebay and changed them out. I had no idea how many miles were on the plugs or wire. I've put 41k on the car. Anyway I went from 38mpg give or take 1/2 mpg down to 32/35 mpg.
Are these motors very touch to plug choice or does after market wires cause this?
The miss is gone and the power seems fine but the mileage sucks.
I drive 45 miles each way to work on the highway so the type of driving didn't change.
Any Ideas?
The other thing that seems strange is the car came with 13" wheels and the previous owner had 17" on it and when he sold it he put 14" on it which is what it has now. The car had the trans replaced at some point in its life. Not sure if it went from one 5 speed to another or if it had a 4 speed and he put in a 5 speed but anyway the speedometer is off. It runs faster than actual. The error seems to start about 55 and by an indicated 80 I'm actually doing 75. I would have expected that if it has larger wheels and tires it would read lower not faster. What do you guys think of that, and what do I check?

did you gap the plugs right? i did mines to .43

also when you changed the wires, did you change them 1 at a time so you wont mess up the firing order?

I would say try to get someone to trade you 13" wheels/tires for your 14"s. Set your car up how it is supposed to be so it will run correctly.

I am not sure if I read your original post correctly but did you say you bought used plugs/wires off of ebay?

also make sure you put anti-seize when you put the plugs on. aluminum head + stuck plugs = $$$$$$

These cars come from the factory with the speedometer reading high. If you have a 95 EX it came with a 1.6 engine and 14" wheels from the factory. More important than wheel size is tire size. The factory size was 185-60-14. Many people put 195-60-14's on and the speedometer still reads high. I'm now using 195-55-15's and the speedometer still reads a bit high.

These cars also see a large drop in gas mileage when the temperature drops. My commute is 60 hwy miles round trip at 65 mph. I get 36-37 in summer and only 30-32 in winter when it's cold.

Good point, weather can be a factor. What kind of mileage are you getting anyways?
