Is my driver's axle seated fully?
I wrapping up my swap and trying to get the axles installed. The driver's side axle is troubling me and I'm not sure if it's in all the way. When I tug on the shaft I can move it, but the inner boot is stuck to the diff and doesn't move. Is that in all the way? It looks like there's still an 1/8" to a 1/4" gap between the boot and the diff housing...

I know what you mean, and I tried that. I also lined the axle up strait, held a wooden block on the end and hit it with a bfh. I've also tried just pushing on it, and I'm a pretty big guy... I don't know. It won't go in anymore and I've already looked in the halfshaft spindle with a flashlight to make sure there wasn't anything in there.
EDIT: I just talked to a mechanic that will be stopping by to take a look to make sure (he's coming to pick up my roommate anyway). Thanks for the help man.

c-clip? whats that? it looks straight foward but i cant get the bitch in. i took out the halfshaft also and jammed the whole thing to the ground and still no luck. i've tried to push it in really fast but it stops where it is on the pic. i even baseballed batted the mallot onto the axle!

how i always get axles in... put some grease on it.. not alot just a little... then i get it in the trans or halfshaft most of the way.. then i put it in the hub and slam it into the trans or halfshaft.. also put the axle nut on.. its how i been doing it for 6 years.. probably not the right way.. but it works everytime

Re: (postman)
Threads like these made me hate the idea of doing my own axles.
I just changed the passengerside on my D series today. At first it wouldn't go in so I went to put the car in gear. Before I could do that my friend yells "Got it!"
Make sure you have it completely straight going into the tranny/int. shaft. Once it gets in as far as you can get it take a punch, put it in the little hole on the axle (spindle side) and use a hammer. Little force was required to get the axle into the tranny.
Getting it back into the hub was another story.

i just replaced my tranny. i was having difficulty too. once you feel the axel line up in the right spot, push it in a little bit until it won't go any farther, then tap on the big metal part with a hammer on the axel, closest to the tranny. this got it in the rest of the way. it should have a little bit of a gap once its all the way in too.

Re: (zoolander)
well i took a break from the stupid axle. came back to it today and its still the same. i was suppose to bring it to a shop but it was already too late. well since banging the **** out of it did **** but ruin the CV boot, i decided to replace it. even with just the metal housing i cant even pound the **** in. is it bad to torch it?

Re: (bow tie)
well the new CV boot came with a new c-clip which i decided to use it on the axle instead of the CV boot which now i cant pry it out from the half-shaft haha. my only option now is to take it to a shop.
well anyways i decided to start the car with no driver side axle and passenger side axle nut "hand tightened" only. of course this on stands. but even in neutral are the axles suppose to rotate? i'm not in gear but the axle is rotating....???

Re: (siregcivic)
greese it up good, then this sounds bad, but tap it in by hitting the part the rubber boot is on on the axle part your trying to shove in. not the end of the axle. if you havent already tried this. part by the metal band. maybe you got the wrong axle/intermidiate shaft
check the c clip

Re: (7808)
so you have a gap between the intermediate shaft and the tranny? intermediate shaft should slide it pretty easily, were those axles out of that tranny?

Re: (all stock)
naw i have a gap between the axle and half-shaft. the axle doesnt seem to want to go in. i've been pounding the bitch for 3 days. the axle box was labelled with an "L" so i pretty sure it was the driver side. the passenger side (labelled "R") had no problem going in.

Re: (bow tie)
look at my c-clip
the one of the right is the c-clip that came with the New CV boot. i think its the inner c-clip not outer. i tried to use it as the outer c-clip but it was a bit thicker and had a harder time going into the half-shaft.

Re: (bow tie)
my bad, you revived the thread, i didn't see that.
if you've been banging on the half shaft for 3 days, then something's wrong. the left side c-clip looks incredibly worn on the top end, did pliers do that or the banging?
look into the intermediate shaft and see what's been scraping.
