BTW, do any of you guys pull out that little shield? Is it a reflector or to dissapate the heat generated from the bulb?
EDIT: Oven preheated to 250 put em in for about 5 minutes, pull it out, slowly pry it apart with a screwdriver

I used screwdrivers.
I used high temp spraypaint.
And I reused the stock goop that holds them together with some extra silicone to make sure they sealed.

Re: My DIY Black headlight project (hatchi)
once its apart, light sand with 320 or 400 grit waterproof sandpaper... wipe it all off with a damp cloth, dry it off, then apply high temp paint in light even coats. I actually only used one coat because it covered so well. It say the paint is good up to 1200 degrees F, so i think it'll be ok.
I used Armor Coat High Heat Paint (Interior/Exterior) it is self priming, so no need to buy extra crap. All in all it cost me $7 for paint and paper.
To put it back together, re heat the oven to 250, put the housing back in to warm the glue up, then stick it back together. Then let it cool. I used some stuff called Shoe Goo to seal the lights once they were put back together. Just run a light bead around the light where the lense attaches to the housing, smooth it out with your finger, and let it dry for 24 hrs or so. This way its completely waterproof on the front.

It's a shield to keep you from blinding other people on the road (me). If you take it out you'll only get more light where you don't need it, and no more where you do. Just leave it be like it was designed.

How does it affect the way the light focuses?</TD></TR></TABLE>
it doesnt affect it at all. You are just painting the housing and not the reflector
