my del sol is burning oil, few simple questions
95 del sol s, completely stock w/ 115k miles. I changed the oil @ 113k and seems to have burned 1-1.5 quarts. I know I wont be able to actually "fix" this problem by just simply adding additives, however I thought I would be able to slow it down. I guess it made sense all along because for whatever reason in 3rd gear around 30 mph the car would rumble, and as soon as it shifted(auto) it would go away. I dont see a huge loss in power though....weird. So here are my questions...
1. If I simply just keep adding oil and lucas oil treatment without actually taking the motor out and fixing the problem how long do you guys think this motor will last? 10-50k more??.....
2. This motor is pretty early in its lifespan, what could have caused it to burn SO much oil with only 115k??....1-1.5 quarts in 2k miles is ALOT I would think. I have 2 civics with the same motor, and one of them has 225k and burns no oil!!!
3. Should I add an entire quart of lucas oil treatment when changing my oil every 2-3k? Or is that too much?
I mean If the problem is something fairly simple to fix I would want to do it, however I dont want to pull the motor out. daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn it.
Thanks guys...

what weight are you using? try switching to 5w-40 or 10w-40 to slow it down. once it starts to burn, there isnt anything you can do unless its burning through the valve seals or PCV valve(change that, its only a 3-4 dollar part)which is hardly the case
some oils tend to burn faster than others, so look into that. i know castrol gtx tends to burn less from what i hear
smashing on the car, lugging the engine, not changing the oil in time, bad break in, using the wrong oil weight can cause the engine to burn oil prematurely.
i wouldnt even mess with the additives, just continue to top off.

yea i agree switch to a thicker oil and keep toping it off untill you can rebuild or get a new motor. nothing you can do to stop it unless its your pcv valve

okay so the additives are a waste of money....how long do you guys think this motor will last? I will continue to top it off.

It'll go as long as you keep putting oil into it. My buddy used to drive around an 88 Prelude that would do a quart every tank of gas lol, 242K on the motor.

ok so as for life span if you drive like a grandma and top off you could get all the way to 300K but if it's that low miles for a Honda i would look for a leaking seal unless you get a nice cloud of blue Smoke every time to rev the motor. could be a simple as a rear main seal or oil pan gasket

Well I just bought the car with 113k, and freshly changed the oil. It passed MD inspection so I doubt oil would be leaking anywhere underneath...to leak 1.5 quarts of oil is ALOT for a leak I would think. I have another civic that has been leaking badly for 3 years and the entire underneath engine is dowsed with oil and it only leaks about .25 quart a month or so.
I am going to need someone to get behind me and see if they can see blue smoke.
