Is my car vtec??
I just recently bought a 93 civic EX. It does not say vtec on the valve cover but i thought EX was vtec and others have said it is. But how do I know for sure. Its also got the original motor so its not different. So tell me is it vtec???

it should be.
Look at the engine code where the tranny and engine meet, to the left of the head, and it should say D16Z6. And look for a vtec selenoid on the firewall side of the distributor. The EX's valve covers didn't say VTEC

Yes it has Vtec, i believe that the Si was the only one in the EH line up to have VTEC on the valve cover, but a Si, EX, and VX all have VTEC!!!

go check the motor code and report back..its located on the left side of the exhaust manifold about half way down on the block if you are looking at the front of the car..im not sure but i think its vtec..but then again i could be wrong( i was never much of a sohc kinda guy)

Re: Is my car vtec?? (Emerica)
everyone's going to suggest an engine swap... Hell yeah theyre powerful and more expandable.. But.. we dont all have that kindof cash. if your going to mod the engine you have, spend money wisely, on QUALITY parts. (some would just believe that it's more logical to save that money you put into parts and put it towards a new engine.) some people dont want to hastle with an engine swap. Some people like to push a d serie's limit's.. some people like to push b's, and H's... the key here is "SOME PEOPLE"... so man, whatever float's your boat man, keep it clean and make it fast

Re: Is my car vtec?? (VX)
ive heard of SOHC monsters that could tear some b's alive..
Logically, you have more potential out of a swap.
if you phycically built up both engines in parallel (same parts, same overhaul..) until you couldnt do a single thing more to the engine... the b would win. but seriously, who cares?
ive been in that position, owning a CRX-Dx Automatic was my inaguration (SP?) into the honda world.(now i have a DOHC Vtec Del Sol) One hell of a reliable engine.. ive heard stories of people who tried to kill it and were un successfull.. i couldnt afford a swap, nor did i know anyone that could help me.. so i'd have to take it to a shop (More $$ i didnt have) When the time is right, the right thing will come along. anything you do to a car creates a special reaction called knowledge.
that's the all important factor is that you learn about your car. i still have much to learn. Im egar, yet a bit scared, but i know that i have a wide group of smart, willing, and helpful people here on honda-tech that i can trust for answers. (sorry to get sappy)
heh... back to finding my pants...

Re: Is my car vtec?? (VX)
My 92 4 door ex came with vtec on the origional motor when i bought it and did not say vtec. that motor however was blown and I put in a 95 ex coupe motor for the time being. That one did say vtec on the valve cover, so I dont think that it was just the si's that said it. anyway yes the stock motor is vtec like someone said earlier look for the solenoid by the pasenger side rear of the valve cover.

Re: Is my car vtec?? (ALMOSTAFERIO)
it should be v-tec if its still the original motor unless someone fucked with it.
my civic is a 94 and it says v-tec on the valve cover. just check your engine code for a d16z6.
