My Car Produces Oil!!!
Alright well I changed my oil today and here are the following steps I took:
1.) Drained old oil
2.) Removed old filter
3.) Put drain plug back
4.) Installed new filter
5.) Put 4 qts. oil in motor
I then checked the oil level and it read right below the full mark. I then drove the car and came back. I checked it again and it was over the max line. (about half of the length between the two dots.)
So I figured that the oil was hot and finally drained all into the oil pan. I then checked it when the motor was cold and still the same!?
I know that 4.2 is the precise amount to put in, but why with only 4 qts. does it go over the line? Whats ironic is that everytime I had it changed at a local lube place, they filled it to the same height as it shows now....
EDIT: I am not sure how this would affect it, but ill throw this in to:
When I change my oil, I like to put some oil in the oil filter before installing it, but that was included with the total 4 qts. Im confused

how long did you let it drain for? and did your run the car for a few minutes to heat the oil up? you might have had oil in the head and so forth and when you first checked it it seemed at the right pooint but once the car started it started to pump it around and in reality you had more oil in there than you thought

Hondas use anywhere from 3.25-3.5qt oil.
What you did is put 4qt which is .75 - .5 qt oil to much.
really you probably have way to much.
.15 or so in the filter
So really its not producing it has too much
It just didnt fall all teh way to the pan

Being a hybrid owner and owning a gsr motor, you know that 4.2 qts. is what the manual sys for a 1.8 GSR/R motor. I think you may have thought of a sohc motor

Good question. It was however on a flat surface all times I checked it. (garage floor). Thanks though, didnt think of that.
But even if it wasnt, I only put 4 qts. in it.....and let all the old oil drain out.
Here's a thought, but my friend is 100% sure this wasnt the case:
I swapped out my d-series motor for the gsr. I couldnt remember if we put the teg dipstick in the motor, but my friend said that he was 100% sure that we did.
Besides could a civic even fit? Its got an orange cover if that helps?

if i read this correctly u drove around and came back and then it was higher. That is because when you run your motor the oil is then transferred to your engine. And when you came to a stop your oil is still in the engine and running back down to the oil pan. So of course its going to look like its higher. You have to let it sit for awhile.

I think he was asking if you lifted the car with a jack to do the oil change. If so then you probably trapped oil in some areas of the head. Larry

Whats the worst that can happen if you have too much oil in the motor? Let's say, even if it was like only a few mm's above the top dot? Mine is like that but I purposely did it by pouring 4 qts. of oil in a SOHC VTEC motor because I have turbo and figured some oil would be running through the lines, etc.

gaskets and o-rings will go out sooner than normal
