MY BUMPERS ARE FUZZY AFTER SANDING!...

hey guys, i recently sanded the whole car down and every thing is good, except for the bumpers, it looks like its chipping off from a far, but when u get up close it looks even worse, the thing is I SANDED THE BUMPER WITH A SANDING MACHINE, and its now sprayed with black primer, neway the bumper is really fuzzy, feels liek a carpet.. its suposed 2 be liek plastic.. i see this can of spray paint, its called like BUMPER COATING, at this car place down the street... it says it repairs old bumpers... will that help? because its really nasty.. ne info. would be great help! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

my guess is that your sand paper doesn't have a high enough grit rating. You need really high grit sand paper and when you wet sand it, it should get smooth. check your hobby shop or something like that for high grit paper.

no, i think i really damaged my bumper... cuz the more i sand, the more fuzzier it gets! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

You may have ruined it. It's not like metal, so the more layers you go down, the worse it's probably getting.

you sanded to hard with a low grit..use 600 and use warm soapy water..you dont need to sand the shit out of it just make it all dull and smooth..and dont finger it

im telling you it wouldn't hurt to try higher grit sand paper and some warm water. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

True, it wont hurt.

Nobody on here can say for sure unless we see them, but most likely yes you did ruin the bumpers beyond repair. May I ask who/what told you to use a sanding machine in the first place? Wet sanding a car takes time, patients, and a gentle touch, and some experience.

reguardless of what it is, unless its a fiber composite, it should be able to become smooth again with a good lap job.... listen to them, reallly high grit, 600 then 800, and even higher, will make it smooth, but be sure to use water and soap.

dude, yes you need higher grit sand paper and warm soapy water. but dont expect to rub the shit out of it for it to go faster. GENTLY rub the warm soapy super high grit sand paper over the bumper, this will remove the fuzzyness and hopefully get it to the effect you want. if this dosnt work then you fucked ur bumpers up

Get at least 1000-1200 grit and do it with a spray wax(keeping it wet at ALL times), After sanding it get yourself some 3M hand glaze and put a few coats of that on then follow with some good wax.....should have no problem with it

I used a DA sander and 1400 grit paper when I sanded my car and the whole thing turned out perfectly. And as for "ruining" the bumper: as long as there's plastic still there it's salvageable.

They're never ruined beyond repair, fiberglass is your friend.

I made the same mistake trying getting those little fuckin liscense place holder bump things off my front bumper on my first hatch. I wet sanded to no avail. Threw some fiberglass on and sanded it smooth, it fixed it and came out decent.

I'm going to have to sand my rear bumper on my hatch now because my friend decided to try to push my car with his beater Grand am and scracthed the shit out of it, at least this is before I started painting it.

Anyway, like everyonbe said, try wet sanding with some hihg grade paper. If it doesn't work learn how to work with fiberglass if you don't want to buy new bumpers.

yeah dude, i think i really fucked my bumpers up... crap.. i used a fuckin 40! for the roughenss of the sand paper, why did i use 40... because my friend wanted to get the SHIT OVER WITH under 1day... that asshole, so i said fuck it.. i dont think there is ne plastic left on the bumpers... im fucked... neway, would there be neway to fix this or i'd have to buy new bumpers... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

That sucks bro, sorry that happened. That's why I said it might be "ruined" since so much plastic was taken off.

One thing you might try is to get an estimate at a body shop, usually they'll tell you exactly what they'd have to do to repair it and that would give you an idea of what's necessary, maybe you could do it yourself.

Re: MY BUMPERS ARE FUZZY AFTER SANDING!... (BadEH2)

you mentioned "carpet, 40 grit, and a DA". :shakes head:

let me ask you did you put a hole thru the bumper yet?

if not, since you mention carpet, its there because of the roughness of the 40 grit, so the bumper is all scratched up.

youll need a lot of different grit paper if you want to fix it, or you can go buy another bumper.

anyways so get the next rough grit (80 grit), and sand that area over.

then go over that same spot with a 120 or 140 grit.

then 180, 320, 400, you catch the drift? after 400 grit, you can jump to 1000-1500 grit it should be back smooth like a babys ass, that is if you didnt put a hole thru the bumper the first time with 40 grit

BTW: DO NOT USE THE DA (or machine) whatever you was using. Use your hand with a sanding foam pad.

Re: MY BUMPERS ARE FUZZY AFTER SANDING!... (BadEH2)

then work you way up as it would sand off the "carpets" as each higher grit get finer and finer. so by the time you are at 1000, 1200, 1500, the surface should be nice and smooth.

Re: MY BUMPERS ARE FUZZY AFTER SANDING!... (=GAMEOVER=)

i see, i will really try that, sounds like a good idea...! thanks!! wat is a sanding foam pad? u want me 2 just sand it with 80 now.. then liek 140, then 200, etc.. with my hands... wats the sanding foam pad? others say i gotta use water and sand it also..

turbotime 10-02-2004 10:55 PM
