my 1997 civic is making a sound when i turn my lights on?
i barley noticed this today after i did a rear disk brake swap. i hear a sound that seems to be coming from the short ram intake on my car. I only hear it when i have the headlights turned on. its like some vacuum sound. its more deep though. when i turn my headlights off, the sound goes away. has anybody ever had this problem?

Sounds normal. The headlights will increase electrical load on the alternator which will increase the load on the engine. IIRC, the ELD will tell the ECU to compensate for the load by bumping the idle just enough so the engine doesn't bog. The only way the ECU can bump up the idle is through the IACV, which will open just a little more and that could cause a vacuum or slight whistling sound.

ok, now im getting curious. last night my car just acted VERY strange. whenever i would shift, it would have a little jump to it. right when i engage the clutch. my transmission has been grinding since i bought it. on ALL gears. i dont know if its my tranny or engine. sounds like engine though. oh well. excuse to get my engine swap sooner right?

**** that thing, god damn IACV
I've fixed it 10 times, but I forget the procedure, someone else will answer this
although I don't remember ob2d cars having one
right next to the map sensor, pull it apart, plug up a hole, something along those lines
headlights are probably just causing a current draw large enough to effect it

Pull the OBD2 code with a code reader or have AutoZone do it for you.

If you have an OReillys near you, take in your driver license and they will loan you their scanner. At least they do where I'm at. IACVs are easy enough to clean, either way though. My 97 had one, it was an HX and I don't know about other models. It would be on the back side of your intake manifold, next to the throttle body. If you have one, pull it off (a couple bolts, coolant lines and an electrical plug) and clean the screen and other port with an old toothbrush and brake or carb clean. Put it back on and clear the code. Should solve that problem. As far as the jumping when you shift, does it clunk forward, or are your revs high when you engage the clutch?

If the idle is around 2000 rpm when the transmission acts funny, I would definitely say the high idle is to blame. If it acts like that all the time, it could be the clutch not disengaging all the way which would most likely be master or slave cylinder problems. Either way, you still have the idle issue to deal with too. Did you ever get a chance to pull the code(s) with a reader?
