msd cap install
i bought a modified cap to accept an external coil, I was under the impression that all i had to do was remove the oem cap and replace with the msd unit. It doesnt seem to fit because the distributor has this tall pointing thing sticking out (has a spring inside of it) thnx

Re: msd cap install (jazz215)
I don't have one, nor have I ever installed one or looked at one in detail..... But common knowledge would tell me you need to remove your oem coil and run the wires that attach to it to the new external coil etc..... Don't you have instructions???

Re: msd cap install (jazz215)
try taking the distributor off your car and then try taking the rotor off that way. you'll get better leverage that way. then take the coil off and your gonna have to hook up the correct wires to run to the blaster coil or which ever coil you decided go with. good luck to ya.

Re: msd cap install (ghettochild7)
I just bought Crane's external cap kit and need the coil now. Looks like a bunch of stuff to hook up. Mine didn't come with instructions either, but crane's website has them online.

Re: msd cap install (jazz215)
I've done it...
It was pretty easy...
Have you removed the rotor retaining screw? if not it's not going to come off with that in... it's a phillips head and you get it to the point you can get to it by bumping the starter to get the engine to crank just a little... or you can turn the crank till it's lined up.
then you have to remove the stock coil... That's the post with the spring thingy... However if your cap was already modified to use an external coil that should be gone... (if you're using an external coil).
You need to disconnect the two wires going to it... then run those wires to the power and ground of the new coil (You do have an external coil right?) there is no space on the cap to acomodate the wires so I just sandwich them in between the cap/oring and the stock wiring cutout... (it compresses and doesn't pinch off the wires.)
Then just put on the cap and coil wire... that's it...
it's pretty straight forward... a little bit of a pain though...
If you have any more Q's feel free to ask.

run those wires (via an extension) to the external coil...
I cut off the stock end tabs of the wire and then soldered them to some power/ground wire I got... then ran those wires to the new coil.

you put those on the external coil, you will have to extend them.
EDIT: damn, if I only I had a digial camera, I would do a write up on it. I have spare dizzy lying around.

that is your new coil input, you have to run a ignition wire from the coil to the cap

1 remove old coil
2 run wire from old coil to new ext coil
3 run an ignition cable from ext coil to msd cap (red post)
sound right?
also do i have to drill a hole in the msd cap to run the wires to the ext coil?
thnx for helps

yeah, I do, you do not have to worry about wires not getting enough power and/or other problems

Re: (jazz215)
off topic and dont mean to steal thread, but if im just running an ignition box (MSD SCI) without external coil etc. will it fry my stock components, or is it safe to run by itself?
just a yes or no will work.

Re: (1slowcivic)
jazz215: Yes, drill the hole for the wires to pass through. it is cleaner and better IMO

Yes, it is safe. drill a hole. solder the wires so you that they will not come loose.

Re: (turbogixxer)
Just be careful when you run the wires through the new MSD cap, make sure the wire(s) are not in the way of the rotor cause that will cause problems. Make sure the rotor can rotate freely without snagging on the wire. By the way, you should not have to drill a hole for the wires if you are running the MSD cap, there should already be a hole for it.
And to the other guys question, yes you can run the SCI without the external coil without any problems.

heheh, thanks guys, i actually just found the hole, it was covered with a plastic cap. I was wondering why msd called it a modified cap, if i had to do the drilling. lol.. now, how do i get that rotor off (without stripping it). any tips? its being a pain in the ****!!

Re: (jazz215)
use and impact driver or spray some WD40 and see if that makes that easier to break that screw loose. I would get a spare screw before you do anything else. Chances are that screw is in there pretty good so you might have to use some heavy duty force and end up stripping it anyways.
