If you want people to help you, you need to provide proper details/info.

-What car do you have and what engine?
-What modifications are done to the car?
-Any current work done to the motor or did this just start happening out of no where?
-Do you have a CEL?

That would be a start.

Could it be the cap and rotor?
The pins in the cap have residue on each of them and the rotor looks old.
My spark plugs are good as well as the cables.

My bad. Just frustrated.
Its a d16y8 head on a d16y5 block.
I have no cel codes at the moment. I cleared the p0420 and it didnt come back.
When i put the y8 head on about a month ago it did this, however i thought it was due to the assembly lube i used on the valves. (thought it was butning off)
so it did it for about a mile then never happened till today. But now it wont go away.

Also could it be a bad fuel pump?

Thats the frustrating part. If had a code i would just scan it then fix it. But no code.

a p0420 code is for catalyst efficiency, i know you checked to see if the "exhaust" was clogged, but did you check for a clogged cat?

Ive been driving around with that code for about a month now. Everytime i clear it, it pops right back up within 2 miles if driving. Also the cat was clear considering i punched out all the combs.

Today when i took off the exhaust i examined both o2 sensors and looked okay. I put it back and ran the car for a while and still no code. Went to checkers, jack in the box, and kmart and still no code. Wierd.
But the car still runs crappy. I bought a new cap and rotor cause before i left i cleaned the old one and it seemed to run a little better.

However i broke the new cap tightening it so i kina up tge creek.
Oh and not to mention the screw that holds the rotor in was broken so now i gotta extract it.

I feel like just buying another distributor.

K so i was waaaaaaaaay off base. Drove the car for about 40 miles, and it still lags. Not as bad as used to but it lags. Also cel code p0420.

The motor starts off weak then it starts to clear up but not as powerful ad used to be and i find myself using lower gears to keep up with traffic.

Yesterday when i took the dustributor off i noticed something.
The part the connects to the cam has lots of play. It actually swivels.
Is tha a problem? Its still connected to the dustributor but has play.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!

Its on the intake side. So im gonna tighten it an see how it goes.

Heres a couple of shots.

Without the bolt.....

So i took it for a quick test and its worse.
The tach jumps up and down as it climbs and it sputters and backfires like crazy.

+1 for you. I decided to change my oil filter out of randomness and found that the pivot bolt on my alternator was coming off. Then after fixing that and changing the oil filter i decided to play with the distributor. It made a slight difference for the better so i am gonna tackle the timing tomorrow. That was my initial diagnosis but i didnt want to deal with that. At least i got a new cap, rotor and oil filter.

your catalytic converter being clogged WILL MAKE YOU CAR LAG. it will feel exactly the same as if your timing was off. my cat was clogged so i holowd it out and BAM. problem solved. depends where you live though, you may not be able to get away with it.

As for the cat, it wasnt clogged. I now have a straight pipe exhaust. It was defintely the timing.
