Re: Motor identification question
well he indeed did a motor swap because the zc engine only comes from japan.. but its not a d16y8 motor.. meaning its not a 98 ex civic motor... looks like a zc block with a vtec head.. kinda like a mini me swap.. the head could be from the d16y8 though.. hrmmmm

Re: Motor identification question
if it is a mini me thats not a y8 head. The valve covers are different. Unless its a y8 head with a z6 valve cover its not a y8 head. It probably is a jdm engine.

Re: Motor identification question
ecu is that little grey computer box about 6"x9". Its located on the passenger floor under the dash panel. It has a sticker on the ecu which will have a specific code. That usually tells you what your running and what motor you have.

Re: Motor identification question
Huh I was under the understanding that zc's were not vtec. I thought that they were just a normal motor with not varable timing electronic control. What it seems like to me that he has is a zc block with a z6 head making it a mini me. The 3 zc's I've owned 2 single cam's and one dual cam never had a vtec crossover and I installed 1 single and one dual cam my self and know the wiring was right. Who knows though maybe there was some uber super rare "jdm vtec zc" that exists only in internet jdm land?

Re: Motor identification question
Its a vtec ZC, there were numerous D-series engines stamped ZC, about 8 IIRC
SOHC non Vtec ZC
SOHC dual carbed ZC
SOHC Vtec ZC
DOHC non vtec OBD0 ZC
DOHC non vtec OBD1 ZC
there are more than that, but those definately exist, all are stamped simple ZC.

Re: Motor identification question
Well its not fact. motor. So guy may have been telling truth then. Roughly how much pwr does motor have then, basicly stock w/header & exhaust. Also would it be hard to make it a dohc & would that help pwr?

Re: Motor identification question
Roughly 130ish to the crank. So after drivetrain loss about 90-100hp at the wheels or less. To make it a dohc you would have to swap out the motor, do some wiring, motor mounts, trans, unless you go with a dual cam zc then you would just have some wiring and lil things. So unless your good at wrenching or have some friends to help you out I'd say yes it would be hard to make a a dohc. But the power gains from something like a ls/vtec or a b20/vtec would be very nice and noticable. I'd say just drive your car the way it is and start saving for a swap. Or you could just go K series.

Re: Motor identification question
K series is out of a 02+ acura rsx, or a 03+ civic(not sure what year it started in civic), the best one is the one out of a Rsx type s. Or you could jdm and go with a 02+ integra type r(same thing as rsx but still kept integra name). Its gonna run you around $4-$6k for a full swap in your car mounts wired and all. Search some or your gonna get flamed.

Re: Motor identification question
True, I was to tired to type it all out. That's why I told him to research before going any more. I've seen a few k's with trans go on ebay for $3500 then another $500 for mounts and wiring, then $500-800 to have it installed, then $500+ for if you want i/h/e what ever else. So right around $4800 installed if you just go stock and know the right shop.
