motor cuts off at 5500 rpm.....what could this be?????
To start off with a i have a 97 coupe with a 94 z6 motor in it. When my friend did the swap we had a problem with the dist. obd 1 - obd 2 problem....i didn't have the harness to convert so my friend got on his grind and sottered (sp?) the two dist. together. Cars been running fine ever since, just at times idle is a little funny, but nothing drastic.
Heres the deal.......pretty sure i have a bad head gasket, oil is only leaking through the rear left side of the motor (where block meets head meets tranny). Talked to a friend and he said it could be a pc something sensor, located under the intake manifold. He said that that has an O ring and that could be leaking the oil in that area. Back to my problem........i check my oil just about every other day. For some reason i just haven't checked it for a maybe 3 or 4 days.....
Now to my problem.....yesterday i'm driving on the highway driving normal. I had to get on it to merge on the highway so i brought the rpm's up.......i feel my motor cut off like if i hit redline. I wasn't paying attention to my dash cause i was trying to merge, but i know i couldn't have reached redline where i was at......so i just kept it moving. Later on in my journy i go to drop it into 4th and boogy a little bit and it cut off at 5500 .so i'm almost at my uncles house and off the highway. At a light i figure let me bring the rpms back up when i start to go......so at 5500 in 2nd it did the same thing...so needless to say i granny drove it the rest of the way. Do the family thing for a while then its time to go...i check my oil....dry as 2 day old **** .....run to the store pour the oil in, let iut sit for a while. Its running ok quiet, light smoke out the back.....so i rev it in the driveway and it goes past 5500 ( i only brought it up to 6000). I drive all the way home (30 min. drive) with no problems, but at the same time i shifted at 4000-4500 every time.
Now i figure my motor wouldn't cut off like that because of a head gasket. Am i wrong for assuming this?...I figure its something with the fuel.....maybe a fuel filter or something, or could it be something with the distributer?....any help would be greatly appreciated.....Will

Your oil pressure light didnt come on? I dunno y it had a fuel cut. maybe the extreme temperatures with no oil in the system was leaning out the fuel mixture and it could have thrown its self into a somewhat limp mode.
When you replaced the oil the temperatures in the engine were normal and the ECU seen that everything was ok so the motor operated like it was suppose to.
