Default Moth ***** for higher octane?

I have heard of people putting moth ***** into their gas tanks to boost octane, and I believe that it works. My question is, how bad, if at all will this hurt a motor? They say only put 3-5 into a full tank of 91 to get to like 94-96 octane. Anyone ever hear of this and is it safe?

ive heard and seen it in other forums it has about as much performance gain as a cup of sugar

try it hto and runs a few tanks of gas and let us know for a future ref. and then do a write up

TOM: The kind of mothball you mention, Bart, is made of naphthalene, which is a hydrocarbon, like gasoline. For those chemical engineers reading today, it's C10H8, and it looks like two benzene rings fused together.

Jim says that benzene makes a very smoky fire when burned, so his guess is that naphthalene would make a lousy gasoline.

On the other hand, he says, since it's just carbon and hydrogen (like gasoline), naphthalene probably wouldn't do any harm to the engine, either.

RAY: Another type of mothball that COULD potentially hurt things is made of dichlorobenzene.

That won't improve your car's performance, either, but since it throws chlorine into the mix, it can produce HCl as a byproduct when burned.

TOM: For those of you who don't remember your high-school chemistry, HCl is hydrochloric acid, the stuff that burns through almost anything it touches. And pumping HCl through your engine and exhaust system is probably not very good for its longevity.

Many things will boost octane because of their chemical structure, however, unless you're turning up the boost every time you add them, they are not cost-efficient enough to run on a regular basis when you can just find a Sonoco that sells 94 at the pump.

I was just wondering, but the link that was given shows a person doing it...since nobody here does it, or even trys it, I wont either...some say it works, and others say it doesnt....I dont think that I will try and find out what happens.

You must be kidding right? Sugar will burn up and do bad things to the engine. I hope you are yanking his chain.

this was on mythbusters, the moth ***** really did give the gas a higher octane, but they weren't sure about the long term affects.

Octane is a stablity rating...actually 87 octane has more power than 93, just less stable.

Seriously if you have the money to build a car that requires 93+ octane you should have the brains to dish out the extra couple bucks for good gas

And if you also remember correctly, They poured sugar into that gas tank and "busted" the myth that sugar in your gas tank will ruin your engine. I don't think so.

I used to hang around /\ that forum before the n00bs got it. I posed the same question to a bunch of old school hot rod builders. Several of the better posts to the thread got deleted when everyone left. Consensus of opinion, is that it doesn't really do anything good for performance, and could possibly harm your engine and fuel system. I'd thought about risking it with a carb, but with fuel injection, I'm not touching it.

Even if your octane is boosted, you will still not see a gain. I hope mythbusters also help out people who think that putting 99 octane is a stock civic will do nothing but possibly drop power and lower milage due to missfires.

I don't think its worth it...

Unless it was a sure-fire thing, then I'd get 87 and let my car smell like Asian and Indian homes,
