Default Miswired swap can cause black smoke at high rpm?

I`m sitting here in Japan with a few minutes to kill on the internet and anticipating my return to the states where my pita civic awaits. Since I swapped in the JDM B18C it has blown smoke out the tail at rpms in excess of 5500. I know it isn`t the valve stem seals so I was thinking perhaps the pcv valve or the piston rings. However, before I do any of that, I was wondering if in wiring the JDM motor into my USDM car I might have miswired something. Would that possibly cause the smoke? The engine, aside from the aforementioned smoke seems to run ok. All help is appreciated!

nope, if you wired something wrong it would make black smoke all the time, or wouldn't idle/accelerate correctly. THe only possible thing you could screw up with in the wiring is like.. VTEC, Knock sensor, the various other sensors such as TPS, etc. But those will not cause black smoke at high rpms.

Your motor is probably burning some oil at high rpms, but I see a lot of Honda's that when they enter VTEC black smoke comes out, so maybe it's normal.

Maybe just running HELLA rich at high rpm? Is it tuned?

My dad said that he saw black smoke at high RPM when he came out to see me run an autocross. I know VTEC burns a little oil when it kicks, so I just figured it was that. Sounds like it could be your problem too, since it happens near the cross over point.

When I cross into vtec I pour black smoke from my tail pipe. Could be testpipe though.

If the smoke is black its not burning oil, it's just running rich. When you get back just take your car to get tuned and if it's bothering you go get a compression test. If the smoke is white or blueish white, then you have to start worrying.

I did a compression test before I left for Japan. I don`t recall the exact numbers, but they were good and within 10% from highest to lowest. So, you guys are thinking I`m just running rich? Could this be due to the JDM ECU? I`m sure it does need a tune, so perhaps I`ll start there. The tailpipe is coated with black crap, so that is probably the rich ehxaust(?).

Sounds about right to me.

Given that the only mods to the motor are header and intake, and that I am still using the JDM ECU, what would you recommend I get to tune it? I am sure there are many options, but I wouldn`t mind some input. I was thinking perhaps adjustable cam gears and some sort of engine management or a chipped ecu?

I think that cam gears and a vafc will be just what your looking for.
