Spark plugs fouled, cap and/ or rotor burnt, distributor a little shaken. Once about ten years ago I wnet from 5th to 1st, meaning I was shooting for 3rd on deceleration. I lost my tranny. Jsut be glad it was nothing serious.

what rpm did he hit when he down shifted? hopefuly you just blew off a plug wire off the cap. worst case scenario you have a bent valve/valves.

he was at around 5-5.5k rpm when he shifted, checked the plugs and # 1 have some oil deposits on it the rest are fine. all the wires were on good also. i cn hear a tapping in the motor though. is there a way to check if any valves are bent/broken without taking off the head?

oil on plug could mean a bad ring in that cyl compression test is your best friend rite now

Ouch, if that isn't a typo, #1 cyl probably had a valve meet the piston. Pull the head man.
