Default Mini me

Ok, so I just bought a 98 ex 4 door 2 weeks ago, and im kind of new to D-series. Ive done a **** pot load of research in the last 2 weeks and learned a lot, considering before I didn't even know what obd1 and obd2 were. Lol. So heres what I have, and ive yet to run into a forum with this situation. Whoever had my car before swapped the factory y8 motor+ecu for a y7. God knows why, i assume that the y8 blew up and they just went for the cheapest fix possible. Im sure of this as ive looked up my VIN and the car was oringinally a y8, i even had to extend wires on my AIT sensore to get rid of my CEL. So I wanted to do a mini me swap, and the y8 would make sense as my harness in the car is for a y8, like literally all the Vtec wires were cut and wrapped with electrical tape. They are just dangling out of my harness now. But i am attepting this on a tight budget. I have a complete 92 EX at my disposal, d16z6, intake, ecu, harness, the entire car. So with all that, should i go buy a y8 head/intake/ecu ect and spend a bunch of money i dont have for a 20hp gain, or should i attempt using the z6 i have at my disposal? Keeping in mind that my harness is already a y8 harness.. Any help would be appreciated, plz don't be douche bags, i am new to this and want to learn, and i have done countless hours of research and not found anyone in this situation having a y8 harness with a y7 motor and ecu. Thanks...

Oh yes and I forgot to mention, my 98 has a manual tranny, and the donor 92 with the z6 is an auto, so if i did decide to go with the z6 swap i would still have to find/buy another ecu for a z6 with manual tranny.

It's my understanding the Y8 and Y7 block are identical or so darn near that the differences are not notable.

As such, swapping the Y8 head on and slapping the Y8 ecu in will restore the car to normal.

I'm also assuming you still have the Y8 intake manifold and only the head and block were swapped. If not, you should get all other Y8 parts that are missing (intake, exhaust, sensors etc).

As such, this won't be considered a minime as much as a stock motor for the car even though the block stamp says D16Y7. And would be why you haven't really seen much on the forums regarding this under "minime" searches.

Yes, you are correct except i also have the cheap plastic y7 intake. Im assuming whoever put tge motor in just did a complete motor swap and didnt take any time trying to swap any parts for performance. My question is should i attempt to put a z6 head on my y7 block with having a harness for a y8? I only consider this because i have a complete 92 ex with a z6 at my disposal, as in it wouldnt cost me any money other than gaskets and a p28 ecu for a manual tranny, or would it be worth my money to make it easy and go buy a y8 head, intake, and ecu? Also keeping in mind im trying to do a build on a tight budget. Thanks for your repy!

no knock sensor on the y7, running an obd2 vtec ecu will not work. swap the z6 in, use a jumper harness and the p28 ecu from the donor car.

Is there provisions on the Y7 block for the knock sensor?

And I don't mean threaded, just casting provisions to drill and tap?

So the y8 has a knock sensor? And because of that i cant drop a y8 head on my y7 block?? If the knock sensor is in the block, not the head im good to go bc my harness is that of a y8, and i have no CEL as it is. Some moron swapped my ex y8 for a y7, entire motor and ecu.

Ok so i was misunderstanding, its not a problem now bc even if theres a knock sensor dangling somewhere from my harness, its not wired to the ecu, and ill run into trouble after i hook up a vtec obd2 ecu, correct?? And if that is the case how have other people made the y7 to y8 mini me swap possible?? Would a CEL be the only issue? And how/where can i find a jumper harness if i decide to use the z6 that i have?

I just got done doing a mini me swap in my car, the y7 has an un-used, (already drilled and everything) hole that is just missing the sensor. To install the knock sensor, you just take the intake off, and literally screw the knock sensor in, (right under the 3rd runner of the intake) and be careful cause at first i thought the oil pressure sensor and that isnt the case, its literally an inch under the intake (3rd runner) once you take it off.
