Default million Dollar questions Dseries Bseries

Ok so I have been tosing the idea of going back to the cars Roots (D16Y8).
Now before this turns into a B vs D I want good info and good coments. not like. Just build a B series or Ds are better. Good Knowledgable answers and well thought,

Now to the question of all time and the scenario of all time.

I just got some cash and I choose a B18c1 swap. I go and buy the motor now I got a good deal and paid 3,500 for everythingto just plop it in. Of course I dont know what I am doing so I get a shop to do it. now the shop is a good deal say install and tune 1grand. I am now in my motor and car 4,500. Now my friend also ran into some cash. And he has the same car and same motor 1998 D16Y8. and he chooses to go buy a a tubo nice kit piced together and got the kit for 2200 installed. Needs better fuel and Engine managment so he gets hondata 800 dollars. He just spent 3,000 and went turbo Plus he needed new pipes so he got his custome 3" for say 500 from a local shop. Total for friend 3,500 total for me 4,500

Now we go to the track. now this is in UT so Higher elevation. I do my best run at 15.5 and he runs all day long 15.0 flat all day. SO I decide well I need to beat him I need a Header intake and Exhaust. So I call around and get a JDM Header for say 350, and find a steal on a AEM cold air for 175, and a great RSR exhaust 450 and a free flow cat 100 bones. Now I am up to 5,575 and again I dont know how to install and the shop hooks me up at 225 for everything installed and retuned on the dyno. so now we are at total 3,500 for his and 5,800 for mine.

Now re run at the track and I can now beat him say all the tuning and time I am runnng a best of 14.75 and he is at 15.00 still.

So the million dollar question is.....

Why is a B18C1 so sought after if a little less cash and you could build a SOHC to beat it with less money? Now I dont want a war I want solid answers as to why the cost difference of almost 6 grand up against 3.5 grand? just to run the same. Are my figures off. if so tell me where? I am saying a shop in all fairness I know you could do it yourself. But you could also do a Junkyard turbo for 500 bucks also.

So what is your take. why why not D or B.

Basically let me know why I should keep my Bseries. If say at finnaly 15,000 in my motor I am finnaly able to run a nice 10 second but he is behind me at say 11 sec for 8 grand? Am I the first to even ask or question? Let me know

this was exactly my little porblem a few months back. i wanted more power, my choices were B18C1 swap or turbo. i had my heart set on swapping for so long until i came up on the MAXrev deal for 2300. I was like "bet" i am going turbo! bought the kit and for fuel management i said i will run with the hack so all in all i spent about 3200. i had to get a few different things that i did not like about the turbo kit so i probably could have spent 2900 all together.

anyway, i am glad that i went turbo because i am making decent power for a SOHC and i stomp on the average car out here with a swap. i am not really worried about beating everyone but really i just enjoy driving a car with a little extra power.

when i look back at the money i spent IMO it was more worth the money i would spend for a swap.

i am completely satisfied with my choice. its all up to you wat you wanna do and how much money you have

is your car red by chance? and who is your friend with the turbo'ed sohc. i only know of one other car around that is turboed and its a yellow 92-95 coupe.

Another thing that you have to consider is the condition of the engine that will be running the turbo. It will cost a lot more than the theoretical 3500 if you need to rebuild the motor to handle the turbo.

hey, a fellow utahn, welcome to the no atmosphere capital of drag racing. if you want a truely fast drag car in utah, FI is the way to go. the fastest all motor honda in utah, a yellow ITR, just beat his own record of 13.95 with a 13.69 run at the last midnight drags, although he built his car more for auto-x than drag racing, he has over 10k into the car. my friend cody ran a 12.07 with a fully built SOHC non-vtec turbo, he has around 8-10k into the car. the guy who built his car, cortney green, ran a 10.9 in his turbo EG with B18C bottom end and B16 top end, he also has more than 10k into the car. basically, you cant expect to be faster just cause you put more money into the car. also, that turbo'd ex probably has around the same HP as your B18C1, but i guarante its got a lot more torque.

I'm a D series nut, but not gonna get into this one. I've given my thoughts in too many post recently about this topic.

Just here to say that your shop is rippin' ya off for install prices. I can get a GSR in my EH for $300. Plus I can sit there and watch them do the work. A maintenance tune up for $100 tops.

It would have been cheaper for you to by a car jack and do the header and exhaust. Level 1 out of 100 to complete as compared for hardness, simple unbolt the old - bolt up the new. Intake takes 1 philips screwdriver and a 10mm socket w/ wrench. Experienced mechanic 1 hour, noobie to it, a few hours....for i/h/e.

BTW: SOHC VTEC/Turbo IMO

Different goals different options.

I am only going to daily drive and occasionally auto-x my car in the future so, my choice is a smooth predictable power band and will be a B18C1.

I don't want to struggle with a turbo and all the additions needed to get it fully reliable, Let alone street legal.

$3,500 for 170whp JG/Edlbrock SOHC turbo
$2,700 for JDM B18C + another $800 to get it US legal and replace the water pump and timing belt. $3,500 for a reliable engine.

NOW, sell your SOHC VTEC changeover to a CX or VX owner for an easy $500. Your B18C1 swap cost $3,000 and your Cali legal.

That's my route, because I want strong stock power for a while.

EDIT: Since you have already spent the money, you might as well turbo your B18C1 and blow the snot out of your friends times.
